Chanovice between the castle, nature trail and folk architecture
Chanovice offers an unusual combination of Baroque history, nature experiences and regional everyday culture. The focal points are Chanovice Castle, surrounded by a park, a nature trail through the castle grounds and the Chanovice Open-Air Museum. This makes it possible to combine different interests in a single stay: historic architecture, landscapes, traditional crafts and the peasant culture of past centuries.
Castle and church as a historical starting point
Chanovice Castle is a Baroque castle surrounded by a park. A Gothic fortress originally stood on its site. The Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross is located directly next to the castle. The Baroque building was constructed between 1751 and 1764 and partially preserves elements of the former Gothic sanctuary. Several historical layers therefore meet in this place: the medieval fortification, the Baroque castle and a church in which older architectural elements have been preserved.
Nature trail through the park and landscape
A particularly vivid way to discover Chanovice is provided by the “Příroda a lesy Pošumaví” nature trail. It is 2.2 km long, can be walked in both directions and is intended for pedestrians. The trail leads from the Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross in the castle grounds through the park over Chlum Hill to the folk architecture exhibition, the Chanovice Open-Air Museum. In this way, the trail connects a historic starting point with an exhibition of rural architecture and life.
At nine stations, the nature trail provides information about significant plants, animals and the geological conditions of the surrounding area. This creates a clear distinction for travel planning between a purely cultural visit and a route that explicitly incorporates nature-related topics. There is also a 31-metre-high observation tower along the nature trail. From there, views extend across the Šumava from Český les to Českokrumlovsko, as well as over Blatensko and Brdy.
Open-air museum and regional way of life
The Chanovice Open-Air Museum presents historical forms of village living, agriculture, domestic production and crafts from the second half of the 18th century to the first half of the 20th century. It is not only about individual buildings, but also about various aspects of earlier rural life. At the same time, the open-air museum is a rescue project for endangered examples of folk architecture in southwest Bohemia.
A visit outside regular opening hours is possible by prior arrangement for groups of 10 or more. This regulation expressly concerns visits outside regular opening hours and should be taken into account when planning a group trip.
Crafts and regional traditions
Events are also part of Chanovice’s cultural profile. Den řemesel, a presentation of traditional crafts, takes place every year. The autumn Den tradiční potraviny is a regional festival in Chanovice. The two events focus on different aspects: the former centres on demonstrations of traditional craft activities, while the latter celebrates the regional tradition surrounding food.
