Accommodation in Zelezná Ruda
Železná Ruda combines the landscape of the Bohemian Forest with a distinctive cultural history. Glassmaking, ironworking, natural history, glacial lakes and marked trails offer a range of travel ideas – from a museum visit to a winter-maintained connection to Čertovo jezero. This allows you to choose your accommodation based on the experiences you want to include in your travel plans.
Glass, Iron and Natural History in the Town
The permanent exhibition at the Muzeum Šumavy Železná Ruda focuses on rare examples of the local glassmaking industry. The museum is housed in a villa built by Krištof Abele in 1877. The permanent exhibition also includes a section on ironworking and the hammer mills of the Bohemian Forest. Železná Ruda therefore presents two defining themes of regional history: glassmaking and iron processing.
The Environmentální centrum Železná Ruda presents the fauna and flora of the Bohemian Forest and includes exhibitions on the geology and geomorphology of the region. Another cultural attraction is the Kostel Panny Marie Pomocné z Hvězdy church in Železná Ruda. From 1 June to 30 September, you can arrange guided tours with explanations there by telephone.
The Bohemian Forest Landscape around Železná Ruda
The glacial lake Jezero Laka is the smallest, shallowest and highest glacial lake in the Bohemian Forest. Mount Pancíř is located near Železná Ruda, while Jezerní hora, Ruckwiesberg and Kühberg are in the surrounding area. The Bayerwald-Tierpark Lohberg is also located nearby. These destinations therefore represent different nature and excursion themes, without limiting the region to a single type of landscape.
Hiking, Cycling and Themed Trails
From Železná Ruda, a connection maintained for pedestrian traffic in winter first follows the blue markings and then the red markings to Čertovo jezero. For a different way of getting around, there is a signposted cycling loop from Železná Ruda via Špičák; the chairlift to the summit of Pancíř also carries bicycles. The Sklářská educational trail passes through the surroundings of Železná Ruda and Špičák and has 16 stations about glassmaking in the Bohemian Forest.
