Nemilkov combines a distinctive castle history with a specific opportunity for hiking. The village is home to a small Renaissance château dating from the 16th century. A KČT hiking route starts at Nemilkov railway station and follows the yellow-marked trail towards Makov. History and outdoor activity thus offer two clearly distinct starting points for planning a trip.

Nemilkov Castle: A History in Several Building Phases

The Renaissance château in Nemilkov was created through a renovation at the end of the 16th century. The Czech nobleman Jan Bohuchval z Hrádku lived in Nemilkov and converted part of the fortress into a Renaissance château with a farmyard. The farmyard adds the courtyard area to the castle’s history; the renovation can therefore be understood as a development within an existing complex.

At the end of the 18th century, the castle gained a west wing and a Baroque façade. The west wing represents a structural addition, while the façade represents a change to the building’s exterior appearance. This makes it possible to distinguish the later building phase from the late-16th-century Renaissance renovation.

A guided tour with commentary at the castle covers its changes from the Gothic period through to Classicism. It gives the history a broader time frame than the two specifically dated building phases and connects the different periods with the castle’s development. Check the current tour arrangements before your visit.

The rooms visited at the castle include the public and private rooms of the former Schreiner family of owners. The family had to leave the castle after the Second World War. Thus, alongside the architecture, family rooms and a historical turning point are part of the local history: the distinction between private and public rooms makes it possible to understand how the castle was used as a residence, while the post-war history marks the rupture in the family’s life.
