Podůlšany – Cultural Monument, Church and Cycling Route

Podůlšany is a destination for travelers who want to combine cultural history with cycling while getting to know different sides of the village. The Opatovický Canal as a Protected Cultural Heritage Site

The Opatovický Canal is protected as an immovable cultural monument. The protected monument includes a sub-object at the bridge in Podůlšany. Its canal bed often takes the form of natural river meanders. River meanders run in sweeping curves; the canal bed therefore often changes direction instead of following one continuous straight line. The Opatovický Canal can thus be viewed both as historic water engineering and through its alignment in the landscape.

At the bridge in Podůlšany, the protected canal is connected with a specific point in the village. The watercourse can therefore be understood not only through its protected status, but also through the sub-object and the course of the canal bed. These two features give the Opatovický Canal its own character within the history of the village.

The Church of St Nicholas and the History of the Village

The first written mention of Podůlšany dates from 1142; the village was formerly also known by the historical name Podolšany. The Church of St Nicholas provides another reference point in time. The Neo-Renaissance church was completed in 1903 and replaced a wooden building of the same dedication dating from 1665. More than two centuries separate the older wooden building from the completion of the present church.

Most of the interior furnishings of the former Church of St Nicholas have been preserved, so elements of the older furnishings remain in the present church. However, the church is only occasionally accessible during services. A visit to the interior therefore cannot be planned at any time; the appropriate time depends on the service schedule.

Cycling Route 4040 Through Open Countryside

Cycling Route 4040 passes through Podůlšany and runs predominantly through open countryside. Regionally, it leads from Lázně Bohdaneč via Dolany and Staré Ždánice to Podůlšany and onward to Čeperka. Podůlšany therefore lies between Staré Ždánice and Čeperka within this regional route.

The stated route length is 12 km; at the destination, a distance marker shows 12.2 km. After passing through Podůlšany, the route continues to Čeperka. Open countryside remains part of the regional route even within the village area. This makes the cycling route clearly different from a visit focused on the architectural and local history of the church or canal.
