Vejvanovice – Church, Tradition and the Novohradka

Vejvanovice lies northeast of Chrudim near the Novohradka River. The village combines a prominent ecclesiastical-historical landmark with a vibrant tradition rooted in the region and a river corridor clearly integrated into the surrounding landscape. A church with many layers of architectural history

The defining building of Vejvanovice is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It has a late Romanesque core dating from the period after the middle of the 13th century. Structural changes from almost all subsequent architectural styles have expanded its appearance and make the church a valuable cultural and historical monument. At the same time, it is considered one of the urban landmarks of the municipality of Vejvanovice.

The church has been documented in Vejvanovice since 1350. A 14th-century presbytery survives from the original building. Directly beside the church there is also a wooden bell tower on a prismatic base. Nanebevzetí Panny Marie is the parish church of Vejvanovice. A service is held there at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. This specific time is part of the local orientation and complements the church’s cultural and historical value with its present-day function as a parish church.

Věneček: a rare, traditional custom

Another special aspect of the village is the Věneček. Both unmarried and married residents actively participate in this tradition in Vejvanovice. The Věneček is included in the Register of Intangible Assets of Traditional Folk Culture of the Pardubický kraj. It is therefore one of the cultural features that become visible not solely through a building, but through the participation of the local population.

The Staročeský Věneček in Vejvanovice has a tradition spanning decades. It takes place once every five years, generally on the third Sunday in May. This rhythm clearly distinguishes the event from regularly recurring activities and makes the date a rare cultural occasion in the annual calendar. A stay around this date therefore places a local tradition at the center, whose special character lies precisely in its long-standing heritage and the active participation of both unmarried and married residents.

Novohradka Corridor and Signposted Cycling Routes

The location by the water is also part of Vejvanovice’s identity. The Novohradka river corridor encompasses the cadastral area of Vejvanovice and, including the adjacent floodplain, has the status of a biocorridor within the ÚSES ecological network as well as the legal status of a significant landscape feature. This classification describes the village’s landscape setting more precisely than a mere indication of its location by the river.
