Vápenný Podol: Church, Lime Kiln and Trails

Vápenný Podol combines sacred art, industrial history and trails through a distinctive landscape. This creates a destination where different discoveries can be combined: the Kostel sv. Václava church, a private museum of Czech electrophone guitars, the historic Dolní vápenka and trails with views across the valley to the horizon of Prachovice.

Church, Art and Special Collections

Construction of the Kostel sv. Václava church began in 1788 on the site of an earlier chapel. The church building was completed in 1790, and the tower was finished in 1796. Inside is the Baroque painting “Klanění Tří králů” by Jan Onghers. The organ also tells its own piece of local history: it was installed in the gallery in 1892 and was made by Petr, an organ builder from Prague.

The Muzeum Retro Jolana represents an entirely different cultural theme. It is a private museum of Czech electrophone guitars and equipment and is described as the first private museum of its kind in the Czech Republic. Thus, sacred art and music history stand side by side in Vápenný Podol, without requiring the same kind of travel experience.

Lime Kiln and Spa History

The Dolní vápenka recalls the industrial side of the village. In 1873, it was established in a sunken depression on the right bank of the Podolský potok as a two-shaft lime kiln with external heating. Documentation for the reconstruction of the technical heritage site has been prepared gradually since 2023. The lime kiln therefore represents a period of local history closely connected with limestone processing.

The history of Vápenný Podol also includes the Lázně svatého Václava spa. The historic Lázně svatého Václava building has been preserved. The spa operated until around 1940; the spring was destroyed by blasting during limestone quarrying. This timeframe preserves the distinction between the surviving building and the former spa operation.

For the topic of the Paleozoic, the unstaffed BIS information centre in Vápenný Podol was placed near the church and the rock.

Trails Connected with the Village and Landscape

Those who want to explore the village on foot will find several different starting points. A red-marked tourist route runs through Vápenný Podol from west to east. The Horem dolem Podolem educational trail includes a stop at the Kostel sv. Václava church, thereby connecting the route with local history.

Stará cesta focuses more strongly on the landscape: it offers views of the entire municipality of Vápenný Podol, its valley and the horizon of Prachovice. Along Stará cesta, the lime-tree avenue later received the status of a state-protected avenue. Thus, this aspect combines a trail, viewpoints and an explicitly protected landscape feature.
