Křižanovice by the Reservoir and in the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area

Křižanovice combines a distinctive dam with a protected river landscape and a network of trails offering several ways to explore the area. The village lies on the northern shore of the Křižanovice Reservoir and within the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area. This means that attention is drawn not only to the water, but also to gorges, rock formations, historical traces, and the choice of whether to focus your stay more on the dam or on the trails in the surrounding area.

Technology and Waterscape at the Dam

The Křižanovice Dam is a straight concrete gravity dam. With this type of construction, stability is achieved through the weight of the concrete structure itself. A road runs across the dam crest, making the structure itself a distinct landmark in the landscape. The waterworks also include a small hydropower plant with a Francis turbine. This combination of reservoir, dam, and power generation gives Křižanovice a technical dimension in addition to its natural appeal, setting it apart from a purely waterside landscape.

Krkanka: Gorge, Rocks, and Waterfall

Near Křižanovice, the Krkanka Nature Reserve protects a gorge of the Chrudimka River. The landscape features preserved there include frost cliffs, stone fields, scree areas, boulder-rich riverbeds, and a waterfall. The nature reserve extends along the gorge from the Křižanovice Dam to the adjoining Strádovské Peklo Nature Reserve. For you, this means a clearly varied natural landscape: the described area begins at the waterworks, while the gorge with its different rock and water features continues through the surrounding area.

Křižanovice is also located within the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area and on the northern shore of the Křižanovice Reservoir. However, specific hotel features cannot be inferred from the landscape; the decisive factor remains the individually verified location of each offer.

Marked Trails in Two Directions

At the Křižanovice Dam, a yellow-marked trail leads north to Chrudim. The same yellow-marked trail leads south from there to Horní Bradlo. These two directions make the dam a starting point from which you can head for different destinations without requiring two separate trail descriptions.

A green-marked trail also begins at the trail junction at the Křižanovice Dam. It is also an educational trail and leads through the Krkanka Nature Reserve. For a trip with children, this connection may be particularly interesting because the trail not only indicates a direction but also combines exploration with the distinctive features of an educational trail. The trails described therefore offer different focuses: a tour towards Chrudim, a southern connection to Horní Bradlo, or a route through the protected Krkanka area.

Historical Traces in Křižanovice

The first written mention of Křižanovice dates from 1329. Remains of historical exploratory ore mining that are still visible today add another trace directly connected with the landscape to the history of the village. Together with the waterworks, this creates an excursion destination where nature, technology, and local history stand side by side: the dam demonstrates the use of water, the mining remains point to the search for ore, and the protected areas preserve the features of the river landscape.
