Vitčice: Village Green, Forest and Štátula Lookout Tower
Accommodation in Vitčice
Vitčice appeals to travellers who want to combine a historic village setting with natural attractions and walking destinations. At the centre is a triangular village green lined with former agricultural farmsteads; the Vitčický les, a pond, field paths and viewpoints add to the local discoveries. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore worth first distinguishing between the village’s history and its forest landscape.
Historic Village Setting and Local Memorial Sites
The chapel with its bell tower is a protected historic landmark and defines the village green of Vitčice. This village setting is complemented by a small ecclesiastical brick building, regarded as a notable example of vernacular architecture. In the historic centre, you will therefore encounter not only a distinctive silhouette, but also different forms of rural architectural culture.
The Vitčice war memorial to those who fell in the First World War was unveiled in 1922 and extensively reconstructed in 2009. The Vitčice fortress is first mentioned in 1406; the last recorded reference to it dates from 1466. At a historic crossroads of important field paths, there is also a statue of the guardian angel, which replaced an earlier wooden statue before 1892.
Vitčický les and the Pond
Vitčický les is a 97.262-hectare nature reserve, first designated on 21 June 1990. Vitčický rybník is the largest body of water in Vitčice and is home to amphibians and aquatic insects.
Paths, Viewpoints and Forest Traditions
The new, hand-carved, five-metre-high wooden cross monument depicting Jesus Christ was erected on Ovčák in 2021. From Vitčice, pedestrians and cyclists can reach the wooden cross via a paved field path along the northern edge of the forest. This specific route connection makes Ovčák an independent destination for exploring together on foot or by bicycle.
The Štátula Lookout Tower stands on the southwestern edge of Vitčický les and can be reached via a path along the forest. The wooden lookout tower is eight metres high; its observation platform is six metres above the ground. Cycling Route 5084 also runs through Vitčice and onward through Vitčický les. A lookout tower with panoramic views was built there in connection with this cycling route.
Forest culture is also part of the character of the village. The wooden cross “Panna Maria in the Forest” is associated with an orally transmitted legend about a poacher and stands at one of the highest points in the forest. “Pytlácká noc” is a long-standing tradition in Vitčice and is held at the festival grounds by the forest.
Vitčice as a Starting Point for Your Choice
If you are primarily looking for architectural heritage and memorial history, the village green provides the appropriate thematic focus. For forest paths, viewpoints and cycling, the Vitčický les, Ovčák and the Štátula Lookout Tower take centre stage instead. When choosing your accommodation, you can use these two sides of Vitčice as a guide to the daily schedule you want.
