Skalka U Prostějova is a destination with several clearly distinct facets: spa tradition, mineral springs, a spa park, educational and play features in the spa forest, and geological sites. If you would like to combine culture, nature and active exploration on your trip, you will find specific themes here for different day plans. This means the town can be viewed not only through its healing springs, but also through its history and landscape. The geological sites complement the spa and forest themes with a focus on natural history.

Spa History, Springs and Spa Park

Lázně Skalka was founded in 1928. The local history includes the Chapel of St. John the Baptist in Skalka, built in 1828; its name is associated with the local healing springs. Lázně Skalka uses four local mineral springs: PRAMEN SVATOPLUK, PRAMEN CYRIL A METODĚJ, STUDÁNKA JULINKA and STUDÁNKA JAN. Skalka’s spa park is located on the site of the former Bařisko pond. For planning your day, the spa history can be combined with the spa park and local mineral springs as a separate thematic focus.

Experiences in the Spa Forest

In the spa forest, the “Tóny lesa” project includes newly installed educational and play features: an educational dendrophone, a memory game and “Strom jako dům”. There are also balance and fitness features, as well as a forest megaphone. The sports area at Lázně Skalka includes a multi-purpose court and a mini-golf course. In addition, the Pivín–Skalka educational trail was officially opened in August 2019. It has eight information panels covering the history of the municipalities, the surrounding nature and the spas. Veronika Janíková created the educational trail in cooperation with the municipalities of Pivín and Skalka. This makes the playful, sporting, acoustic and cultural-historical themes clearly recognizable.

Geological Features Around Skalka

The landscape complements these spa and recreational sites with striking geology. Skalka - písky is an extensive, horseshoe-shaped former quarry with a diameter of 70 m and walls 10–12 m high. It is located near Lázně Skalka on a marked hiking trail and displays a unique sequence of Sub-Badenian sediments. Jezírka Skalka is a geotourism site: the former small quarries are now filled with water. Greywackes of the Myslejovice Beds emerge there from Sub-Badenian pelites of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin. Skalka - písky and Jezírka Skalka therefore offer different geological focal points: in one place, the horseshoe shape and sediment sequence define the landscape; in the other, the water-filled quarries and greywacke outcrops take center stage.
