Brníčko between a Romanesque Rotunda and Castle Ruins

Brníčko combines striking historic buildings with excursions in the nearby and wider surroundings. In the centre of Brníčko lies the complex of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Its core is an original Romanesque rotunda with a circular nave, cylindrical lantern and horseshoe-shaped apse on the eastern side. Adjacent to the church complex is a cemetery with numerous significant sepulchral monuments. The term refers to tombs and memorial monuments and points to the particular historical density of this place.

Church, Cemetery and Castle Complex

Above the municipality of Brníčko of the same name, the ruins of Brníčko Castle stand on a hill. Preserved are the ruins of a two-storey palace, a tower, parts of the curtain wall and park wall, as well as ditches and ramparts. The ruins of Brníčko Castle are freely accessible all year round. The Hrad Brníčko castle is also located in the immediate surroundings of Brníčko; in the wider regional area are the ruins of Nový Hrad. Alongside the castle complex in the village, these additional historic destinations in nearby and more distant landscapes form part of Brníčko’s regional character.

Excursions with Clear Distances

The excursion from Lesnice to Brníčko Castle is 10 km long, takes approximately three hours and includes 289 metres of ascent and descent respectively. The route is therefore a three-hour hike with ascents and descents, forming a self-contained part of the day; distance, time and elevation gain are all part of the day’s planning. For cycling, the “Cyklo-výlet za poznáním historie” cycling excursion passes through Brníčko and is 19 km long. It complements the walking route with its own active perspective on the history of Brníčko. When planning the excursion, the destination, duration, elevation gain and mode of transport therefore all count together.

Local Products and Events

Another facet of the village is represented by Ovčí statek U Hrdličků in Brníčko. The family farm produces fresh cheese from unpasteurised milk, curd cheese and matured cheeses. The cultural calendar includes Středověké odpoledne: the 2024 edition was the 14th edition; the municipality subsequently announced preparations for the 15th edition. Středověké odpoledne was held at Brníčko Castle on the first weekend in July.
