Palkovice Between Forest Landscapes and Discoveries
Palkovice combines nature, culture and different ways of exploring the area. Local highlights range from protected woodland and sacred architecture to a hiking trail, ski resort, reservoir and wine harvest festival. If you would like to make your trip varied, you can combine landscapes, architectural history, exercise, water and regional festival traditions.
Forest Landscape and Myslíkovské Lurdy
The Palkovické hůrky nature reserve protects natural woodland typical of the northern foothills of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. Myslíkovské Lurdy are a special place here. They can be reached via a walkable hiking trail that continues more than 250 metres away from the road. Myslíkovské Lurdy include a chapel carved into the rock with a statue of the Virgin Mary, as well as an entrance to a pseudokarst cave. The site therefore combines a nature-oriented route with distinctive religious and geological features.
Church and Chapel as Testaments to Architectural History
The Church of Saint John the Baptist was built of stone in 1631. It is regarded as valuable architecture from the time of the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648). As a single-nave church, it has a vaulted presbytery. Its historical origins and architectural design are therefore both clearly evident.
The Chapel of Saint Maurice offers a different accent. It is a brick-built late Neoclassical chapel erected in 1851. Its rectangular floor plan, semicircular apse and gabled façade define its form. The exterior is articulated by pilasters and lesenes. Thus, Palkovice is home to sacred buildings from different periods, each with its own distinctive features.
Hiking, Winter Sports and Water
The Janáčkův chodníček trail focuses on the local nature, monuments, composer Leoš Janáček and the history of the area around Hukvaldy. It is best reached by car or public transport. By comparison, the route to Myslíkovské Lurdy continues more than 250 metres away from the road. The two routes described therefore offer different focuses when planning your excursions.
The Palkovice ski resort has two downhill runs. The Olešná Reservoir on the border with Frýdek-Místek offers another form of leisure: it is used for recreation, water sports and sport fishing. The options reviewed here therefore include both a winter sports destination and a waterside destination.
Regional Tradition
Palkovické vinobraní, a wine harvest festival, is held regularly in Palkovice. This local festival tradition complements the nature and cultural themes with a seasonal occasion that highlights the regional character of the area.
