In Frýdek-Místek District, the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy meet historic town centers, castle ruins and wooden churches. The Beskydy Protected Landscape Area covers around 43 percent of the district; forests account for 51 percent of its area. Wide and narrow valleys, mountains and numerous cultural monuments shape the tourist offering. This gives you different ways to plan your trip: focus on scenery and outdoor activities, or on history and architecture.

Beskydy scenery and protected nature

At 1,323 meters, Lysá hora is the highest peak in the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy. Across the wider Beskydy region, long mountain ridges, deep valleys and extensive forests shape the landscape, along with orchid-rich meadows and pastures where sheep graze. These broader regional features complement the valleys and mountains of the district, though the scenery is not the same everywhere.

One example of protected nature is the Mionší National Nature Reserve near Horní Lomná. The Mionší nature trail does not pass through the nature reserve; a short section runs through its buffer zone below the reserve boundary. The trail is for pedestrians only and has ten stops about the nature and history of the Mionší primeval forest. It is open seasonally from August 1 to September 15. Check current local conditions before planning a visit.

Hukvaldy Castle Ruins and their distinctive features

The ruins of Hukvaldy Castle are among the largest castle ruins in Czechia. The castle was probably built in the first half of the 13th century. Its Chapel of St. Andrew is considered the best-preserved structure in the castle. From the tower, the view stretches to the Beskydy ridges, Kopřivnice and Příbor, as well as across Fryčovice to Ostrava.

Around the castle, visitors can observe fallow deer in the game reserve; conditions may vary from one visit to another. The views, architectural history and chapel each offer a different perspective: you can explore Hukvaldy through both its historic complex and its landscape.

Town and museum culture

Frýdek-Místek, the district seat, has two restored historic town centers. Frýdek-Místek District also has the largest number of wooden churches in Czechia. The wooden church in Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem is considered an old church and offers a specific example of this rich heritage.

The permanent exhibition of the Beskydy Museum is housed in Frýdek Castle. It includes more than 800 exhibits, including a loom and a traditional Wallachian room; the exhibition content may change. The museum presents traditional crafts and the way of life of people in the Beskydy foothills. The castle is also home to the ornately decorated Knights’ Hall, with the coats of arms of the Silesian nobility, and the Chapel of St. Barbara. The Beskydy Museum also manages Hukvaldy Castle—a connection between two of the district’s prominent cultural sites.

Outdoor activities and herbal baths

The Beskydy area of the district offers opportunities for alpine skiing and paragliding. The Morávka-Sviňorky ski area has two snow-covered slopes of different difficulty levels: a 600-meter red run and a 300-meter blue run. Paragliding offers a different way to experience the Beskydy as an active destination.

Visitors can enjoy herbal baths in Komorní Lhotka. Along with the castles, town centers and nature destinations, this adds to the range of interests you can pursue in the district.

Choose accommodation based on your travel interests

When looking for a hotel in Frýdek-Místek District, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: castle and town history, protected nature or activities in the Beskydy. The places and experiences mentioned here offer specific starting points.
