Janov Between History and Rural Landscapes

Janov U Krnova combines the traces of a medieval mining town with the character of an agricultural forest village. The town lies in the western part of the Osoblažsko microregion in the valley of the Petrovický potok. From here, the landscape rises steeply toward the ridges of the Hrubý Jeseník. This creates a destination where historical sights and a distinctly rural setting stand closely side by side.

Baroque and Traditional Townscapes

Janov Square is home to a Baroque statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1739. Another prominent testament to the town's history is the late Baroque Church of the Holy Trinity, built between 1780 and 1783. Both buildings give the town center a clearly recognizable historical character, without reducing Janov to a single monument. The cemetery also preserves distinctive architectural details. It contains one Pseudo-Renaissance and one Neo-Gothic funerary chapel, both dating from the 19th century. This setting is complemented by two houses, numbers 21 and 49, which are regarded as examples of folk architecture. The Janovské muzeum is also part of the town's historical heritage. It was established in the 1990s, when the former school building was reconstructed for the first time. Paths Through Meadows, Forests, and Field Margins

The landscape around Janov includes mountain ridges, forests, and meadows densely crossed by strips of field margins. A centuries-old lime tree stands 800 meters southwest of Janov Square, in the direction of Zlaté Hory. In the southern part of Janov, you can still see structures built from flat stones. Their enclosing walls are up to 2 meters high. The surviving structures show that the area is shaped not only by its landscape but also by traces of its earlier use. The rural landscape around Janov is suitable for walks in every season. Depending on the type of excursion you prefer, the focus may be on open meadows, wooded sections, or the surroundings divided by field margins.

Educational Trail in the Border Region with Poland

Another way to explore the area is provided by the St. Roch No. 6 educational trail. It runs through the Janov district in the border region with Poland and follows marked hiking trails throughout. Most of the route leads along forest paths through difficult terrain dominated by coniferous forests. The educational trail also includes a small forest playground. In this way, the route combines nature observation, marked trail guidance, and a specific place to stop in the forest, while the terrain retains its original, partly challenging character.
