Tvrdkov combines nature trails, a stream flowing through the village and a distinctive local history centred on the late Baroque Church of St Anthony of Padua. The village is located in the northwestern part of Sovinecko Nature Park. Hiking and cycling routes lead in different directions; the church and a sandstone statue add a cultural touch.

Hiking, Cycling and Landscape

A red-marked hiking trail leads north from Tvrdkov to Špičák. The trail can continue to the ruins of Rabštejn Castle. Another red-marked trail runs southeast towards the Rešovské vodopády Natural Monument. The destinations therefore lie in different directions and can be considered separate hiking options, rather than one shared route.

Cyclists have a route of their own: a cycling route passes through Tvrdkov and leads via Horní Město and Stará Ves northeast to the Skřítek excursion destination. The distinction between the routes is useful for planning: the hiking trail to the north and its possible continuation towards Rabštejn contrast with a cycling route whose destination is to the northeast. Check the trail markings locally before setting out.

The Tvrdkovský potok flows through Tvrdkov. In the area around the village, the Rešovské vodopády National Natural Monument encompasses the surroundings of the confluence of this stream and the Huntava. Tvrdkov’s location within Sovinecko Nature Park and this connection to a protected landscape offer nature enthusiasts specific points of reference, without conflating the village with the natural monument.

Church of St Anthony and Local History

The single-nave late Baroque rural Church of St Anthony of Padua is a protected cultural monument. It was built from 1768 to 1776; a sacristy was added in 1814. Its funding also tells part of the village’s history: the construction was financed by local residents, especially the village judge Augustin Linke.

Before the church was built, the site held a wooden bell tower, a mortuary and a cemetery. Another notable historical episode took place during the First World War, from 1914 to 1918: the church bells were removed and melted down for war production. They included the oldest bell, dating from 1601 and weighing 400 kilograms. Chandeliers and the pipes of the local organ were also removed and melted down. The church’s history thus encompasses not only its construction phases but also the loss of important furnishings.

Another monument in Tvrdkov is the sandstone statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, made in 1848. It stands on a tiered plinth adorned with reliefs of saints. Its material, date of creation and plinth design give the statue a distinct art-historical profile alongside the church.

Considering Tvrdkov as a Destination

When looking for hotels for a stay in Tvrdkov, you can tailor your plans to your specific interests: the routes offer hiking and cycling options in different directions, while the church and statue bring the village’s history to life. This makes it possible to assess whether nature experiences, cycling, hiking or cultural discoveries matter most for your trip—or whether you would like to combine them.
