Troskovice: Trosky Castle, Trails and Discoveries for Children

If you would like to combine castle history, marked trails, and unusual collections during your trip, Troskovice offers many specific points of interest. The main attraction is Trosky Castle, with its eventful past and the Baba Tower. There are also hiking trails from several locations, a designated cycling route, a museum with around 3,000 exhibits, and an activity that involves children during their castle visit. The combination of sightseeing, exercise, and playful learning allows you to focus on different aspects during a single outing. Trosky Castle and the Baba Tower

Trosky Castle was founded by Čeněk z Vartenberka at the end of the 14th century, approximately between 1380 and 1390. During the Hussite Wars, it was besieged in 1424 and 1428, including by Žižka's troops. One of the most distinctive parts of the complex is the Baba Tower. You can reach it via 138 steps; at the top, there is a viewing gallery with extensive views across the landscape. In this way, the castle combines historical context with a specific viewing experience.

Marked Trails and Travel Options

Marked hiking trails lead from Sobotka, Hrubá Skála, Valdštejn, Borecké skály, and Podtrosecké rybníky to Trosky Castle. For orientation when traveling by train, Borek pod Troskami and Ktová are the nearest stations to the castle; both are approximately 3.5 kilometers away and can be reached via marked trails. A seasonal tourist bus connects Jičín with Hrubá Skála via Prachovské skály, Jinolice, and Troskovice. From the stop near the Svitačka campsite, marked green and blue hiking trails lead 1.3 kilometers to Trosky Castle. When choosing your starting point, you can distinguish between several landscape approaches and the two railway stations. The route via Svitačka combines the bus journey with a 1.3-kilometer walk, while the cycling route offers a considerably longer activity.

Cycling Route, Museum, and Activities for Children

The 39-kilometer Branžež–Kopicův statek cycling route passes through Troskovice. It is mainly suitable for mountain bikes and cross bikes and complements the trails around the castle with a longer route option. In Troskovice, the Muzeum panenek a medvídků pod Troskami presents exhibitions of historical and artistic dolls, teddy bears, and toys. The museum contains around 3,000 exhibits. In June 2024, the “Trosky dětem a školákům” project also began: for an additional charge on top of the admission ticket, children can purchase suitable activity sheets and solve entertaining and educational tasks during their castle visit. The museum thus provides a distinct highlight alongside the castle tour, while the worksheets accompany the visit with specific tasks. In addition to views and exercise, visitors can therefore also choose collecting, observation, and playful discovery as different ways to engage.

Apolena East of Troskovice

Apolena is located 0.5 kilometers east of Troskovice. The site includes Sklepy, the largest rock fissure cave in the Bohemian Paradise, as well as a traditional winter habitat for bats. The range of attractions around Troskovice therefore extends from castle history and scenic views to active routes and a distinctive landscape and natural feature.
