Marenice: Nature Reserves, Wetlands and Baroque Culture
Marenice, known by the Czech place name Mařenice, combines protected landscapes with an unusually rich cultural history. The surrounding area contains nature reserves, moors, wet meadows and rock formations; in the village and along historic paths, you will encounter Baroque churches, chapels, religious reliefs and traditional rural buildings. If you are looking for accommodation in Marenice, you can therefore focus your search according to your preferred theme: observing nature, sacred architecture, local history or a combination of these.
Protected landscapes around Mařenice
Mařenice lies at the heart of the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area. The protected area was designated in 1976 and covers approximately 270 km². The Jezevčí vrch National Nature Reserve is also located nearby. It was designated in 1967, covers 80 hectares and extends across elevations from 420 to 665 metres. Together, these figures provide an initial sense of the destination’s landscape scale: Lužické hory represents the extensive protected landscape area, while Jezevčí vrch forms a more specifically defined natural area.
Several protected areas lie directly within the municipality of Mařenice. The Brazilka Natural Monument comprises heathland, dry and wet meadows, small moors and wetlands. The Luž Nature Reserve is also located within the municipality, covering 25.83 hectares and ranging in elevation from 645 to 793 metres. On both sides of the Czech-German border, it protects mixed forests, rock formations, frost cliffs and block fields. The Rašeliniště Mařeničky area is also located near Mařenice, with a downy birch bog woodland, moorland, bog cranberry, round-leaved sundew, wet meadows and reed beds containing a potential bird nesting site.
Baroque churches and rural architectural heritage
The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene was built between 1699 and 1714; its master builder was Octavio Broggio from Litoměřice. The Baroque church was extensively reconstructed, saved and reopened on 27 July 1991 after 1989. A single building thus reveals both its period of construction and the history of its subsequent preservation.
A chapel stands on Kalvárie Hill; it was built in 1681 and restored in 2010. The area’s sacred heritage also includes the Baroque Sousoší Ukřižování. It was created between 1831 and 1833 and stands at the road bridge over the Svitávka. Traditional Upper Lusatian houses and rural buildings with half-timbered upper floors have also been preserved in the Mařenice area. Along a section of the historic path between Kunratice, Mařenice and Krompach, there are crosses, plague columns from the late 17th century and two religious reliefs carved into a rock face.
Hiking and nature experiences with different focuses
The European long-distance hiking route E3 passes through the Mařenice area. For a shorter route with a clearly defined theme, the Obnova mokřadů na Brazilce educational trail is available. It is 0.75 km long, runs along the edge of a peat meadow within the Brazilka Natural Monument and has four stations with bilingual information panels in Czech and German. The route therefore combines a specific landscape form with information accessible in both languages.
On 2 May 2025, a scenic circular hike ran from Mařenice via Hamr. Together with the E3 and the educational trail, this tour shows that the routes offer different forms of orientation: a European long-distance hiking route, a short nature trail and a described circular hike. For your further planning, you can first decide whether the trip should be shaped more by protected landscapes, natural features and wetlands or by cultural monuments and historic paths.
