Discover Hranicná: Culture, Winter and Distinctive Trails

Hranicná appeals to travelers who want to combine cultural discoveries with winter activities and distinctive trails. A chapel with unusual architectural features, a historic Stations of the Cross, a restored memorial, and the “U Vodárny” ski resort give the place a variety of facets. In addition, Trniště is a granite rock that serves as a destination in its own right and a recognizable landmark in the landscape.

Chapel, Stations of the Cross and Remembrance Culture

A notable detail of the chapel in Hraničná is its granite stone walls and the barrel vault built of bricks. The roof is covered with shingles, and two small windows have decorative grilles. The chapel was reconstructed in 2013 by the Spolek přátel obce Janov nad Nisou. It therefore offers several specific architectural details to look out for during a cultural walk.

The Stations of the Cross were built in 1878 on the property of Josef Klamt. They were restored and consecrated in 1903. Their access differs significantly from that of a roadside excursion destination: the Stations of the Cross can be reached exclusively on foot via marked hiking trails. From Janov nad Nisou, take the yellow trail; from Vysoký hřeben, the green trail. From Bedřichov, or from the other side of the valley of the Bílá (Rýnovická) Nisa in Hraničná, the blue trail leads there.

The history of Hraničná also includes the memorial to the victims of the First World War. It was erected in 1930 by Josef Stumpe in honor and memory of the sons who fell in the First World War. In 2004, it was reconstructed by the Spolek přátel obce Janov nad Nisou. The memorial’s inscriptions, including the names of the fallen, were renewed in 2025.

Skiing and Snowtubing at “U Vodárny”

The “U Vodárny” ski resort offers individual and group ski and snowboard lessons for children and adults. As a special family experience, it also offers snowtubing on inflatable tubes. At Hraničná 1348, the ski resort has three ski slopes. This allows you to choose between lessons, classic skiing, and a playful activity on tubes.

There is specific information regarding access: if the road to Bedřichov is closed, the “U Vodárny” ski resort can be reached for lessons and skiing via Vyšehradská and Hraničná streets as far as the upper lift station. This information is particularly relevant when planning a specific day of skiing.

Trniště and the View over the Landscape

Trniště is a 15-meter-high granite rock with steps carved into the stone. At the top, there is a viewing platform with a railing. However, the view from Trniště is now partially obscured by mature trees. The destination therefore combines a clearly recognizable geological formation with a viewpoint whose current visibility is restricted by vegetation.
