Údrč – Natural Monument and Medieval Traces
Údrč combines a remarkable natural monument with medieval and Baroque traces. The Za Údrčí Natural Monument is located in the cadastral area of Údrč, while the Church of Saint Linhart and the history of the former moated castle shape the cultural character of the village. Údrč therefore offers different points of interest for a stay: you can explore protected habitats, follow an educational trail relating to mining history, and view historic buildings in their chronological development.
Za Údrčí: Nature and Rare Habitats
The Za Údrčí Natural Monument protects the marsh fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia) and its habitats in periodically wet purple moor-grass meadows of the Molinion alliance. A significant population of this butterfly lives in Za Údrčí. The area also includes relatively well-preserved communities of non-forested formations, as well as a nutrient-rich pond ecosystem with high biodiversity.
Other amphibians are also among the documented features of the natural monument. Green frogs are common there; the occurrence of fire-bellied toads (Bombina bombina) has also been recorded. For planning your excursion, this combination offers a natural area in which not just one animal species, but various habitats and their inhabitants, are the focus. An educational trail relating to the mining carried out there in past centuries leads through the natural monument.
Church of Saint Linhart in Údrč
The Church of Saint Linhart probably originated in the mid-14th century and was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 1730s. Its history therefore combines medieval origins with a later Baroque transformation. The church is occasionally accessible. Access is via a seven-section staircase with a lockable gate; a second gate on the northeastern side of the property also provides access to the church.
From Moated Castle to Chateau
The history of Údrč reaches even further back when it comes to its fortifications. The Gothic moated castle was built no later than the first half of the 14th century. The former complex is represented by a circular castle mound with visible remains of foundation walls and a partially water-filled moat. The castle site of the Údrč fortress was entered on 3 May 1958 as a protected cultural monument in the state register of monuments.
Údrč Chateau originated from a Renaissance fortress originally built around the middle of the 16th century. In the 17th century, this original fortress was rebuilt by the Lauenburkové into a Baroque chateau. Those interested in the development of historic complexes can therefore distinguish several historical layers in Údrč: the Gothic moated castle, the Renaissance fortress, and the later Baroque chateau represent different phases of the village’s history.
Location between Prague and Karlovy Vary
Údrč is located about 1 km from the I/6 main road between Prague and Karlovy Vary. Regular bus services to Žlutice run there via Bochov; the stop is located at the turnoff to Údrč. This location connects the small village with a regional road link and the described bus connection. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore weigh whether to focus on the natural monument, the historic complexes, or connections to the surrounding places.
