Ryžovna – Nature, History and the Tin Trail

Ryžovna combines a protected natural area with local history. The Ryžovna Nature Reserve preserves a geological phenomenon and typical mountain communities of the Ore Mountains. At the same time, the church, memorials, a war memorial and the origin of the place name tell of different chapters of the past. Nature and History of Ryžovna

The natural area of Ryžovna represents the geological peculiarity of the region and the typical mountain communities of the Ore Mountains. The protected landscape forms a distinct focal point of the village and complements the cultural and historical sites with a nature-based experience.

St. Wenceslas Church in Ryžovna was built at the beginning of the 19th century in the Josephine style. However, the history of the village goes back further: Ryžovna was founded around the middle of the 16th century. Its name derives from washing tin ore out of gravelly sediment.

A memorial cross, a miniature of St. Wenceslas Church and a memorial plaque on a stone mound mark the former site of St. Wenceslas Church. The three markers preserve the memory of the former church site in different ways. This historical picture is complemented by the Ryžovna war memorial to those who fell in the First World War, which was erected in 1930.

The war memorial commemorates a total of 42 soldiers from Ryžovna who fell, died or went missing. Another regular event in village life is the annual St. Wenceslas gathering held on the feast of St. Wenceslas. Routes between Boží Dar and Ryžovna

Ryžovna can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car via a tourist route. The Cínová stezka, known in German as the Tin Trail, runs between Boží Dar and Ryžovna. The trail was created as a symbol of cross-border cooperation between the Czech Republic and Saxony. The associated project aimed to preserve, protect and further develop the natural and cultural heritage, as well as improve tourist visitor infrastructure in the Central Ore Mountains.

Another documented connection to the landscape is the Blatenský vodní příkop. An approximately 12-kilometre-long educational trail with 23 stations runs along the water channel. The Blatenský vodní příkop ran from the Božídarské rašeliniště via Myslivny and Ryžovna to Bludná. The route thus connects several landscape areas along the water channel.
