Markoušovice: Cycling Route, Nature and History

Markoušovice is a place where nature, cycling and history come together closely. Above the village lie the protected Bledulové louky meadows; a cycling route passes through several villages, while historic buildings and statues give the destination its own cultural character. Cycling between several landscape highlights

For active days, Cycling Route 3 is particularly well described. It is 22.2 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 312 metres, is of medium difficulty and is suitable for mountain bikes, trekking bikes and e-bikes. The route runs from Malé Svatoňovice via Markoušovice, Paseka and Odolov back to Malé Svatoňovice. Along the route, a more demanding climb leads to the observation tower on the Markoušovický hřeben ridge. The route details can be directly combined with the desired amount of activity as well as with nature and cultural experiences. The combination of a set distance, elevation gain and several types of bicycles makes it easier for you to decide whether you would like to make a clearly defined cycling tour the focus of your trip.

Nature and observation tower

The protected Bledulové louky natural site lies above Markoušovice in the direction of the Jestřebí hory hills. The Bledulové louky snowdrop meadows can be observed in spring. Araucarites can also be seen in the surrounding area, meaning petrified wood from trees. The combination of a protected natural site, petrified wood and an observation tower makes the nature section varied: in spring, observing the snowdrops is the main attraction, while the tower provides an additional destination. Another highlight is the Slavětínská observation tower (Markoušovická observation tower). It was built in 2014, stands at an altitude of 708 metres above sea level and is 23 metres high overall. From Markoušovice, the observation tower can be reached via unmarked paths; access is on foot or by mountain bike from Cycling Routes 4090 and 4091, and only a forest path leads to the observation tower.

Buildings and memorials

The cultural character of the village can also be seen in specific buildings and memorials. The Church of St. John the Baptist in Markoušovice is a Baroque building dating from 1771 to 1787; its tower was added in 1884. The cast-iron statue of Emperor Joseph II was originally made to commemorate the centenary of the abolition of serfdom. A coloured statue of Emperor Joseph II can also be seen on private property next to holiday home no. 95 in Markoušovice. The Usedlost čp. 1 estate is a rural building complex with a barn and stables and documents rural construction from the end of the 16th century.
