Milovice u Hořic is a place whose character is best understood through its history. A medieval church, a rectory and a school developed here along an important country road that connected the southwestern lands with Poland via Prague and Hradec. This makes it a destination where historical traces, routes for active days and an outdoor swimming pool can be combined to suit different holiday ideas.

Church and Medieval Centre

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is located almost in the centre of Milovice u Hořic. The complex includes a cemetery and an octagonal mortuary chapel built into the surrounding wall. The church had been listed as a cultural monument by 1972 at the latest. It was originally a Gothic building and still preserves Gothic elements from the second half of the 14th century.

The historical importance of the place extends beyond the church building. In the Middle Ages, St. Peter’s Church and the rectory formed an administrative centre in Milovice that was important to the surrounding parish villages. Those interested in regional history will therefore find not only individual architectural features here, but also indications of how ecclesiastical and local administration were interconnected.

Historical Traces Around the Cemetery

Several monuments add to the picture. From 1754 to 1788, the Panská hospoda building served as a post station on the Saxon-Moravian postal route. At that time, it was associated with an inn and a butcher’s shop; today it is privately owned. The statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands in front of the cemetery. Its pedestal bears an inscription from 1812, and the statue was also restored in 2009.

In the park in front of the local cemetery stands the Immaculata statue made of Hořice sandstone. According to its inscription, it is dated to 1899. On the side of the path next to the cemetery lined with a lime-tree avenue stands the statue of St. Francis of Paola. It includes a relief of St. Wenceslas and St. Ludmila; its inscription dates it to 1799. Finally, the Cyril and Methodius Cross stands at an intersection near the cemetery. It dates from 1854 and was restored in 1888, 2001 and 2009.

Hiking, Cycling and Water

For more active days, the area around the Milovice campsite offers a network of marked hiking and cycling trails. This makes it possible to combine the local history with outdoor activity without limiting the stay to a single type of trip. From June to September, seasonal bicycle buses run through Milovice in the Podkrkonoší region on a route between Hradec Králové and Vrchlabí. This connection is therefore explicitly part of the region’s seasonal transport service for cycling trips.

Another option is Koupaliště Milovice u Hořic. The outdoor swimming pool has a swimming pool with treated water, a slide and a diving board. Younger children have access to a paddling pool with a slide. In addition to the historical sights, this provides various options for a day of swimming.
