Kovač combines a diverse village landscape with protected areas and distinctive routes for cyclists and hikers. Between small Baroque monuments, an old floodplain forest ecosystem and habitats of the fire-bellied toad, a destination emerges where cultural and natural experiences are closely intertwined. For families, this change of scenery can be particularly appealing: brief discoveries in the village are followed by impressions of trees, wetlands and rural paths.

Baroque Traces in the Village Landscape

The fortified area of Kovač lies northwest of the village centre and is characterised by a prominent ridge lined with mature trees. In the centre of the village, on the village square next to the bell tower, stands a Baroque sandstone statue of Saint Isidore dating from 1737. The statue was declared a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture on 27 September 1996.

Further religious monuments are scattered along the roads on the outskirts of the village. In the direction of Butoves, a sandstone statue of Saint Charles Borromeo stands among lime trees on a tall cuboid pedestal. On a hill beside a field path towards Konecchlumí stands a Baroque chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1730 at the expense of the farmer and former village judge Jan Jůza from Kovač. Behind Kovač, near the junction of the field paths towards Kabáty and Konecchlumí, there is also a Boží muka wayside shrine with a sandstone balustrade.

Protected Nature and Remarkable Trees

Kovačská bažantnice is a 30.95-hectare nature reserve. It protects an old floodplain forest ecosystem with diverse forest flora and ancient oak trees. Visitors are asked not to pick protected plants and not to leave any litter behind. Those travelling with children will find a tangible opportunity here not only to observe nature, but also to respect the rules of a protected habitat.

In the centre of Kovač, next to the municipal office, stands the Kovačský jasan. This common ash has a trunk circumference of 530 cm and is 23 m tall. Approximately 800 metres southwest of the village, in the vicinity of Rybník Strašidlo, lies a protected area for the fire-bellied toad and its habitat. The Hluboký Kovač Natura 2000 site also extends across the cadastral areas of Kovač and Třtěnice and protects the habitat of the fire-bellied toad. The shallow, wet banks of Hluboký Kovač provide suitable habitats for amphibians in the vicinity of Kovač, including the fire-bellied toad.

Getting Around by Train, Bicycle and on Foot

Kovač railway station is part of the IREDO integrated transport system in the Hradec Králové and Pardubice regions and is located in Zone 587. KČT cycling route 4140 also passes through Kovač. A green-marked hiking trail runs from Kovač railway station to Konecchlumí and then continues either to Nová Paka or into the Chlum Woods. This allows you to consider different local connections when choosing your accommodation: access via the railway station, the centre with its monuments, or the landscape-focused destinations in the surrounding area. The specific location of individual accommodations cannot be inferred from this.
