Discover Branov

Branov combines an impressive river landscape with traces of history and manageable discoveries in nature. It is also home to the U Eremita educational trail, the Zpropadený zámek archaeological site and a memorial hall for the writer Ota Pavel.

The Berounka and the character of the landscape

The Berounka defines Branov with a large-scale canyon considered to be largely undeveloped and close to nature. The river also brings water sports into the picture, particularly boating. Its significance thus ranges from the landscape impression to an explicitly mentioned activity on the water. This creates a different focus when planning a day than a visit centered on an educational trail or an archaeological site: the Berounka forms the spatial starting point for experiences on the water.

U Eremita: Educational Trail and Nature Reserve

U Eremita is a 1-kilometer educational trail intended for pedestrians and classified as moderately difficult. It begins on the road from Roztoky to Karlova Ves, at the mouth of the Klucná stream where it flows into the Berounka, near an arched bridge. At the starting point, the road, stream mouth, river and bridge are therefore immediately adjacent to one another. The precise location connects the trail with the river landscape right from the outset.

The educational trail provides information about 35 tree and shrub species characteristic of the region. Its natural-history content therefore remains specifically focused on the region's woody vegetation. U Eremita is also designated as a nature reserve. The protected area consists predominantly of scree forest and has a high proportion of yew trees. In the middle of the area, near a spring, there is an active tufa deposit. The spring and the deposit are located within the protected area, not merely in its broader surroundings.

Archaeology and Remembrance of Ota Pavel

Zpropadený zámek in Branov is a significant archaeological site. It is considered a hilltop settlement, hillfort and fortification. The three-part complex has a total length of 220 meters; the two cross ramparts are 2 to 2.5 meters high. This makes a clearly defined historical complex the focus at this location.

In Luh near Branov, the ferryman Karel Prošek's hut houses the memorial hall for the writer Ota Pavel. The Pochod krajem Oty Pavla has once again been announced as its 41st edition and remains a planned event, not one that has already taken place.
