Hořesedly combines a historic village center with a landscape shaped by agriculture. Farmsteads and homesteads have been preserved around the long village green, while the small Baroque church adds another historical feature. Hop fields cover a large part of the landscape.

Historic Village Center and Early History

The historic village center preserves agricultural farmsteads and homesteads arranged around a large, long rectangular village green. Several of the historic farmsteads are extensive. The shape of the green makes the spatial relationship between the village square and the farm complexes a distinctive feature of the village center.

The first recorded mention of Hořesedly dates to 1316. At that time, the village was called Hořesedl; the Vladyka Jan z Hořesedel lived there. The early village name and the named individual give the settlement’s history a specific date that reaches far back before the Baroque period.

Baroque Church by the Village Green

The Church of St. Lawrence (sv. Vavřince) was built in the Baroque style in the early 18th century. The small, unadorned Baroque building has been preserved without later alterations. It stands north of the main road to Karlovy Vary, on the south side of the small village green in a park beside the memorial to those who fell in the First World War.

The furnishings also mark a distinct period: the sculpted altar of the Crucifixion, which defines the church interior, was created in the second half of the 18th century, later than the church itself. A statue of St. John of Nepomuk was erected in the village around the same time the church was built. This allows the different historical moments of the 18th century to be distinguished.

Hop Fields and Rural Character

Hořesedly is traditionally a community shaped by hop growing; hop fields cover a large part of the landscape. This adds an agricultural dimension to the village green, farmsteads and church. For travel planning, these different interests go hand in hand: the village’s history is most evident in its historic center, while the hop fields define the rural character of the surrounding area.

Historic Transport Routes and Getting There

In the 19th century, Hořesedly was the only postal station between Řevničov and Libkovice on the road from Prague (Praha) to Karlovy Vary. Stagecoaches stopped in the village, which also had a place where horses could be changed. This historic transport connection describes Hořesedly’s role at the time as a postal service station.

For planning a trip today, the Hořesedly railway stop is another point to consider: it is three kilometers from the village on the railway line from Rakovník via Louny to Most. If you are considering traveling by train, check the current timetable before setting out. The distance between the stop and the village is also worth factoring into your plans.
