Masojedy and its history

Masojedy was founded at the beginning of the 14th century amid the Černokostelecké forests. The earliest written mention of the village dates from 25 January 1342. Throughout the entire second half of the 14th century, Masojedy belonged to the Skalický Monastery. This chronology makes the village particularly interesting if you want to consider the development of small historic settlements not only through individual buildings but also through their medieval context.

Chapel, bell tower and memorial

The chapel in Masojedy dates from the end of the 19th century or around the turn of the 20th century. It stands on the site of an earlier bell tower in the form of a broad-crowned lime tree with a bell, documented by cadastral maps from 1841. To mark the 666th anniversary of the municipality, the chapel was decorated with paintings and restored under the direction of Josef Vitovský from Hradešín.

Near the chapel stands a granite memorial to the citizens of Masojedy who fell in the First World War. It was erected in 1919 at the expense of the citizens of Masojedy. The lower inscription on the memorial reads “1914–1919”. Together with the chapel, the memorial reflects different historical layers of the village: from local architectural history to commemorating those who fell in the First World War.

The ruins of Šember Castle

The ruins of Šember Castle are located near Masojedy. They are considered an important archaeological site and provide evidence of earlier settlement. The surviving remains include walled remnants on the eastern side, depressions indicating cellars, and remnants of building walls made of medieval masonry. The area of a half-timbered palace and fortifications have also survived.

The castle remains add another historical layer to the local history. While the chapel and the memorial are directly connected with Masojedy, the remains of Šember point to medieval masonry, earlier construction and the archaeological importance of the nearby area.
