Skorkov: Church, Jizera Valley and Forest Landscape

Skorkov combines a historic church complex with the landscape along the Jizera. Three quarters of the cadastral area is forested; at the same time, the river, its accompanying vegetation and a wooded slope shape the appearance of the village. Church, Bell Tower and Ossuary

The Church of Saint John the Baptist is surrounded by a stone perimeter wall. The church was first mentioned in 1359 and was badly damaged during the Thirty Years' War. A bell tower was added in 1698; it acquired its present appearance during a renovation in 1873. The bell tower offers views of the wooded Jizera Valley.

The smaller elements around the church also tell the story of the village. Outside the church cemetery, a stone cross stands south of the bell tower. An ossuary from the former cemetery has been preserved beside the church. It contains an altarpiece of the Virgin Mary carved in the Renaissance style. The ossuary also preserves the legible inscription “1666 Susanna Maria Countess von Luestein”. Jizera, Forest and Protected Landscape

The landscape features of Skorkov include the Jizera and its accompanying vegetation. They also include a wooded, distinctive slope that is partly protected as VKP Lipka. Cycling and Water Experiences

Cycle Route No. 17 connects Skorkov with the neighboring municipalities and is therefore a documented reference point for planning a cycling tour. In summer, the Jizera near Skorkov offers the opportunity to swim. The Jizera also provides facilities for water tourism, particularly for safely navigating the Jizera water route by canoe, kayak and similar sports boats. A distinction should be made between the summer swimming opportunities already described and the facilities intended for the water route.
