Porící Nad Sázavou combines the landscape along the Sázava with an exceptionally rich local history. A stone bridge, two independent churches with different historical traces, and an easy 20-kilometre cycling tour give you several ways to discover the town. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you primarily want to experience culture or plan an active day on a bicycle.

Stone Bridge over the Sázava

The stone bridge in Poříčí nad Sázavou crosses the Sázava. It has five segmental arches with a span of 18.3 metres and a rise of 2.5 metres. It was built in 1849–1850 after a wooden bridge was destroyed by a flood. The bridge is therefore not only a crossing over the river, but also a clearly dated testimony to the town’s history.

Churches with Romanesque and Medieval Traces

The Kostel sv. Havla Church is located immediately on the bank of the Sázava and is surrounded by a small cemetery. It was built around 1225. Its underground crypt is one of four crypts of the same age and type preserved in their original form in Bohemia.

Poříčí nad Sázavou is also home to the Kostel sv. Petra Church. It is considered one of the most remarkable Romanesque buildings in the Czech Republic. Figurative paintings in its apse were discovered in 1914, fully uncovered in 1935, and restored by František Fišer. The chronological span of the building history extends from the Kostel sv. Havla Church, built around 1225, to the stone bridge from 1849–1850.

Cycling and Historical Orientation

Cycle Route No. 19 runs through Poříčí nad Sázavou along the Havlíčkův Brod–Sázava–Čerčany–Poříčí nad Sázavou–Týnec nad Sázavou–Davle route. As a specific addition, the easy cycling tour “From Týnec to Zbořený Kostelec and Poříčí” is listed, with a length of 20 kilometres. At 20 kilometres, the easy tour can be planned as a clearly defined excursion. Route 19, by contrast, connects Poříčí with a succession of places between Havlíčkův Brod and Davle.

The Battle of Poříčí nad Sázavou is also part of the town’s history. It took place on the night of 19–20 May 1420 and was important for reconstructing the Táborites’ campaign to support Prague, which was threatened by Sigismund.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

Poříčí nad Sázavou is served by bus connections in the direction of Benešov–Vlašim and Prague. There are also railway connections from Poříčí nad Sázavou to Čerčany and via Vrané nad Vltavou to Prague. When selecting a hotel or other accommodation, you can include the bus and railway connections in your planning, along with the focus of your days: churches and local history, or cycling on Cycle Route No. 19 and the 20-kilometre tour.
