Louňovice pod Blaníkem between Blaník and the Blanice

Louňovice pod Blaníkem lies in the hilly landscape of Central Bohemia, where fields, forests, meadows and small ponds alternate in a mosaic-like pattern. Velký Blaník rises above the town at 638 metres above sea level. The Blanice flows through Louňovice pod Blaníkem and meanders picturesquely through the surrounding countryside. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider whether the town's history, trails around Blaník or the landscape along the Blanice should be the focus of your stay.

Monastery, Castle and Vibrant Culture

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the surviving part of the former monastery in Louňovice. It was originally Gothic and was remodelled in the Baroque period. Louňovice Castle developed from a fortress built on the site of the former monastery provost's residence during the Renaissance and was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1675.

The castle is used for museums, exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events. The Svatováclavské slavnosti festival takes place at the end of September. It begins with a mass on Velký Blaník and continues with a procession in medieval clothing to the castle. The annual Podblanický hudební podzim music festival takes place in the Jan Dismas Zelenka concert hall at Louňovice Castle and also includes works by Zelenka.

Hiking, Views and Cycling

The wooden Velký Blaník lookout tower has 107 steps and offers views across the Podblanicko region, including Louňovice pod Blaníkem. The steps give the climb a clear, manageable structure, while the view from the tower connects the mountain with the wider landscape of Podblanicko. The S rytířem na Blaník educational trail runs from the Dům přírody in Kondrac via the Velký Blaník lookout tower complex to a car park above Louňovice pod Blaníkem. In both directions, the trail is approximately two kilometres long and has 17 playful stations about Blaník, the Blaník knights and the nature of the Blaník Protected Landscape Area.

The starting point of the Blaník educational trail is about a kilometre's walk from the town square. Louňovice pod Blaníkem can be reached by bus from Benešov, Vlašim, Votice and Tábor. For longer cycling trips, the 32-kilometre Po stopách blanických rytířů route passes through Veliš, Louňovice pod Blaníkem, Velký Blaník and Načeradec.

Small Discoveries and Special Notes

The Beekeeping Museum in Louňovice pod Blaníkem presents the history of beekeeping beneath Blaník, including historic beehives. From spring to September, an observation hive with a live bee colony complements the exhibition. The Nejstarší dějiny Louňovic pod Blaníkem Museum is currently temporarily closed. With a little luck, tiny flakes or scales of natural gold can be panned from the Blanice.
