Záboří Nad Labem: Church, History and Nature
Accommodation in Záboří Nad Labem
Záboří Nad Labem lies near the confluence of the Doubrava and the Elbe. The Church of Saint Procopius, the Baroque Marian Column and the Lžovické tůně Nature Monument offer different ways to discover the town: through architecture, history and the protected habitats of the Elbe floodplains. The history of the railway is another part of the town’s past that can be placed in its historical context.
History from the Monastic Era to the Railway
The village was held by a monastery from 1301; the monastery in question is not identified more specifically. The first written mention of the municipality of Záboří Nad Labem dates from 1338. The two dates refer to different historical facts: the village’s early history of ownership and the later written mention of the municipality.
Another chapter in the town’s history concerns railway construction. Work on the railway line in Záboří Nad Labem began in 1842. The first train arrived on 1 September 1845. Railway construction and the arrival of the first train are thus part of the town’s 19th-century history.
Church of Saint Procopius and the Baroque Marian Column
The Church of Saint Procopius dates from around the middle of the 12th century. Its floor plan combines a broad, short nave with a massive square chancel adjoining it on the north side. A prismatic tower with an onion dome and lantern rises in the centre of the chancel. The sacristy lies to its east, with an oratory above it. The different parts of the building make its architecture a special point of interest for visitors who want to notice not only the date of a historic religious building but also how its interior spaces are arranged.
In addition to the church, the protected cultural monument complex includes the rectory, outbuildings, a wooden bell tower, a perimeter wall and the remains of a cemetery with old graves. The wooden bell tower stands north of the church and should not be confused with the prismatic tower in the chancel. The protected ensemble therefore encompasses more than the church building alone.
The Baroque Marian Column stands on the village green beside the church, in front of houses Nos. 30 and 31. It was erected in 1739 at the expense of the local parish priest, P. Karel Hain. The church and column can therefore be considered both in terms of their architecture and their different dates of origin: the church dates back to around the 12th century, while the column was built in the 18th century.
Lžovické tůně and Marked Trails
The Lžovické tůně Nature Monument also extends into the cadastral area of Záboří Nad Labem. It protects fragments of Elbe floodplain ecosystems, including hardwood and softwood floodplain forests, pools with macrophyte vegetation, tall-herb stands, and wet alder and willow stands. The description covers several habitat types; the nature monument does not lie entirely within the town’s cadastral area.
A tourist signpost beside the Church of Saint Procopius shows the directions of marked trails. The accompanying trail information was last updated in 2016. Check it before setting out if you plan to use it to plan your route. Follow the indicated directions to find your way along marked trails.
