Hlízov – History, Culture and Discoveries

Hlízov combines a long local history with visible cultural monuments, a special culinary discovery and a cycling route along the Klejnárka River. History from Its Beginnings to the Fortress

Hlízov was first mentioned in 1142 as the property of Sedlec Monastery, which held the village until 1421. The former fortification is also part of the village's history: the first fortress was probably built as early as the end of the 15th century and is first documented in 1547. Those interested in different periods can thus follow the development of the village from its first documentary mention through the fortress to later buildings.

An even older find takes us back to prehistoric times. The prehistoric grave in Hlízov contained 20 vessels, including numerous bell beakers. The finds are kept in the Museum of Kolín and give the village another historical dimension alongside its medieval and modern history.

Cultural Monuments in the Village

The monument to those who fell in the First World War was unveiled on 29 June 1924. It is an obelisk made of Hořice sandstone. Hlízov Chateau and the entire farm complex are registered as immovable cultural monuments in the central heritage register of the Czech Republic under registration number 45795/2–1132. The Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers was added to Hlízov Chateau in 1746.

Another distinctive reminder is the stone statue in Hlízov. It dates from the first half of the 19th century and was restored in 1995. The statue is registered as an immovable cultural monument and is freely accessible. The ceremonial chapel stands in the middle of the cemetery on the southern edge of the village, on the road to Malín. Southeast of the village, the protected lime trees at Lípy u Panny Marie grow by the cemetery; they form a significant aesthetic landscape landmark. The sites and buildings thus combine traces of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries with a prehistoric find.

Brewery and Cycling Route

Pivovar Holanďan offers a culinary addition. The brewery offers 30-minute brewery tours with a tasting of the current tank beers for groups of 5 to 15 people. The tour must be arranged at least two days in advance. The regular range includes a ten-degree draught beer, a semi-dark eleven-degree lager, an eleven-degree Kazbek ALE and a twelve-degree lager.

For an active day out, the CKH2 cycling route from Hlízov to Starý Kolín offers an option along the blue-marked KČT trail beside the Klejnárka River. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore focus on the historical sights, a planned brewery tour or a combination of exploring the village and cycling.
