Křesetice: Gothic Church, Baroque Statues and Gentle Hills

Křesetice combines a distinctive historic church with Baroque sandstone statues and a gently hilly landscape. The Church of St Margaret is particularly prominent: the Gothic church from the 14th century is considered the oldest building in Křesetice and stands on a hill above the village. This gives the village a clear cultural focus, complemented by individual monuments at various locations.

Historic sights in Křesetice

The protected complex of the Church of St Margaret includes, alongside the church, a crypt, a mortuary, a surrounding wall with a gate and an access staircase. The crypts of the owners of the Křesetice estate are located beneath the floor of the church. These elements make the sacred building noteworthy not only because of its Gothic origins, but also because they demonstrate the historical importance of the site through several preserved features. The surviving complex thus connects the sacred building with the architectural elements of its immediate surroundings to form a unified whole.

In the village centre stands the Baroque sandstone statue “Statue of St Sebastian” near house no. 140. It dates from the first half of the 18th century. Another Baroque sandstone statue, the “Statue of St Barbara”, was created in 1720 and stands outside the village behind the sports ground. The “Statue of St Wenceslas” dates from 1750 and is located on the road to Úmonín. Together, the three statues mark the village centre, the area behind the village and a road leading out of Křesetice.

Chateau No. 1 is also one of Křesetice’s protected monuments. The monument comprises a former fortress and a surrounding wall. The designation “former fortress” refers to the historic character of the complex, not to a current function.

Landscape and orientation

Křesetice lies in the gently hilly terrain of the Kutná Hora Plateau. The terrain generally rises towards the south and southwest. This landscape places the village in a different setting from a strongly urbanised environment: cultural and historical sites and open landforms are equally part of the village scenery. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider the specific location within the village as a separate point of comparison – for example, in relation to the hill with the Church of St Margaret, the village centre, the sports ground or the road to Úmonín.

Arrival by road and bus

Road II/337 runs through Křesetice towards Uhlířské Janovice, Čáslav, Ronov nad Doubravou, Nasavrky and Skuteč. Regular bus services operate within the municipality of Křesetice. For your planning, both the road connection and public transport are therefore part of the local orientation, without this allowing any specific travel times or distances to be inferred.
