Grunta: Cultural Monument and Routes between Plain and Hilly Country

Grunta is a destination for travellers who want to combine culture and routes in a distinctive landscape. At its centre is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Grunta, an important Neo-Romanesque Secession cultural monument. Designated hiking and cycling routes also lead to Grunta. This makes it possible to get to know the area through its history, landscape and different ways of travelling through it.

Church and Cultural Monument in Grunta

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Grunta offers individual visits with a printed guide. This allows you to organise your visit independently and learn more about a building regarded as an important Neo-Romanesque Secession cultural monument. In Grunta, the educational trail leads to the church and then continues to the yellow and subsequently the green hiking-trail markings. Culture and the route are thus brought together in a specific visitor experience.

Landscape between Plain and Hilly Country

Around Grunta, the Polabská rovina Kolínska gradually gives way to the kutnohorské vrchy. This change in landscape gives the area a distinct geographical character: the extensive plain is followed by a transition to the kutnohorské vrchy.

Hiking on the Stříbrná stezka

The northern circular route of the Stříbrná stezka is a 14-kilometre, moderately difficult route through the Na Vrších Nature Reserve and leads to Grunta. The circular route starts and ends at the Na Pašince restaurant in Kaňk and includes 12 stops. The route therefore provides clearly described guidance for anyone who wants to combine a longer hike with several points of interest along the way.

The northern circular route of the Stříbrná stezka leads from the former Turkaňk mine along a road past an orchard to Grunta. The designation “former mine” preserves the site's historical status. The route's different length and moderate difficulty help you distinguish it from shorter or differently oriented options in the surrounding area, without confusing the route with a mere list of sights.

A Designated Cycling Route

The Vinařská naučná cyklotrasa is 4.835 kilometres long and designated as cycle route No. 0091. It connects to the local Kutná Hora–Grunta road. At this length, it is significantly shorter than the 14-kilometre northern circular route of the Stříbrná stezka.

History and a Local Event

The village of Grunta was probably founded by German miners in the mid-13th century during the reign of King Přemysl Otakar II (1253–1278), when silver ore was discovered in the surrounding area. This probable founding history is closely connected with the historical development of the area, without changing the character of the tradition.

On 28 March 2026, the sixth edition of Velikonoční stezka took place in Grunta. Children completed various tasks and received small sweets as rewards. This documented event complements the cultural and landscape themes with a local event set in its own specific period.
