Děkov – History, Landscape and Cycle Route 8167

Děkov lies in the landscape of Džbán Nature Park and has a distinctly rural character. The varied terrain forms a mosaic of fields, meadows, hop gardens and forests; at the same time, the Zlatý potok stream rises within the territory of Děkov. As a traditional hop-growing municipality, the village thus combines its natural surroundings and agriculture in a vivid local landscape.

History in the Village Landscape

A particularly notable historical landmark is the Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist in Děkov. It is an early Baroque church dating from 1664, built on the site of an older sanctuary that was already mentioned in 1361. The church was rebuilt in 1729. In 1868, it was probably expanded by extending the western part of the nave and adding a chancel gallery. Its construction history therefore encompasses several phases of development. The history of construction can thus be traced over several centuries through a single building.

The village layout also contributes to its historical character. The earliest references to the village of Děkov date from 1325. The present settlement pattern is a compact rural road village with original farmsteads along the main road and a broader area around the village square. Other architectural features include the late Baroque wayside chapel Kaplička pod lipami, with rich architectural detailing and a square ground plan, as well as four newly planted linden trees. House No. 23 is a longitudinally oriented building with a half-timbered upper floor.

Landscape between the Nature Park and Hop Fields

A distinctive landscape feature is Děkovská stráň. This is a registered significant landscape element with thermophilous grassland communities on steep slopes and around rock outcrops. Together with the fields, meadows, hop gardens and forests, it shows the varied structure of the surrounding terrain in particularly tangible form.
