Janov brings together a late-Baroque wayside chapel, local traditions and a remarkable history of hop growing, with tangible traces of the town’s development. The former settlement of Janův důl, a memorial, the MaDiS amateur theatre, a cycling route and a workout playground opened in 2026 offer different cultural, historical and active ways to explore the area. If you are looking for accommodation in Janov, you can match these themes to your travel interests.

JanĹŻv dĹŻl: the original settlement

The original settlement of Janov, called Janův důl, was founded between 1771 and 1779 for workers on the surrounding estates. Its name and purpose capture two concrete aspects of its beginnings: what the settlement was called and who it was established for. Its founding dates place these beginnings in the late 18th century. Further traces of the town’s history can be seen in the chapel, the memorial and changes to the landscape.

Chapel and memorial

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is a protected cultural monument in the cadastral area of Janov. As a wayside chapel, it features an elaborately decorated late-Baroque gable above its façade. This feature at the top of the façade is a specific architectural detail; its protected status also reflects the chapel’s cultural significance.

The memorial to the fallen stands in the village square. It was unveiled in 1937 and bears the names of seven fallen soldiers. The inscription thus preserves the memory of specific individuals. This description does not associate them with any particular war.

Local tales and theatre

The ghost Briknherr is part of local folklore. According to legend, he appeared in the woods around Janov and near the Ewigu Pond (Evíku) between Janov and Deštnice. The phrase “according to legend” identifies the story as folklore, while also specifying its locations. In this account, the pond is one of the story’s settings.

The MaDiS amateur theatre group has rehearsed twenty-one plays and stages its performances in the hall at the local inn. For those interested in culture, it offers a different way to engage with local history than the memorial and architecture: the focus here is on local theatre.

Cycling route, railway and hop-growing history

A 2024 municipal description mentions marked cycle route No. 8167, which passes through Janov. A railway line also crosses the municipal area, running from Rakovník via Louny to Most. Another railway connection is important to the history of the landscape. When the Rakovník–Louny line opened in 1904, the local pond was lost. The railway crossing and the loss of the pond thus represent two different aspects of Janov’s railway history.

A workout playground opened on 7 January 2026. When it opened, it included a wide selection of exercise equipment for all age groups. If you plan to make it a fixed part of your itinerary, check its current availability in advance. Agriculture is also part of Janov’s history: in the old Žatec District, Janov was the only Czech municipality with 2,835 hop gardens. This historical figure adds a specific chapter on hop growing to the town’s history.
