Červené Pečky: Castle Park, Churches and History

Červené Pečky is a destination for anyone who wants to discover different layers of history: a chateau built on the site of a former fortress, a historic chateau park, Gothic and Baroque religious buildings, and archaeological traces from Roman times. There is also a historic railway structure and recurring cultural events. This makes it possible to get to know the place through its history, parkland, and cultural life.

Castle Park and Early Traces

The chateau of the Hrubý z Jelení family was built in the 17th century on the site of a former fortress. The chateau park is laid out in the English style and contains rare trees more than 150 years old. Ornamental plants, especially orchids, were cultivated and bred in dozens of greenhouses in the chateau park; the collection was among the most famous in Europe. In the Ohrada area of Červené Pečky, there is a settlement site from Roman times, with finds of clay vessels, animal bones, and traces of a residential structure. This combination makes the place interesting for visitors who want to connect horticultural culture, history, and archaeology.

Church and Historic Chapels

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Červené Pečky is a Gothic church from the first quarter of the 14th century and was first mentioned as a parish church in 1352. The complex includes a disused cemetery with a historic enclosure and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The Night of Churches traditionally takes place in this church.

Several smaller religious buildings complement the historic character of the town. In 1846, the Hrubý family built the Empire-style Chapel of the Holy Cross with a crypt on the outskirts of Červené Pečky. The burial chapel of the family of Baron Josef Hrubý in Červené Pečky is a late Empire-style building from 1845–1846. The Boží muka in Červené Pečky is a column-shaped wayside chapel from 1757. The statue of Saint Margaret is a Baroque sculptural work from the first half of the 18th century. The three-sided niche chapel in Červené Pečky is a small Baroque religious building from the 18th century. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was originally a Baroque niche chapel from the 18th century and was rebuilt in 1842. It stands on the southern outskirts of Červené Pečky on the road to Bojiště.

Bridges and Music in the Castle Park

The stone railway bridge in Červené Pečky spans the valley of the Chotouchovský potok between the Červené Pečky and Ratboř railway stations and dates from 1899–1900. The Na Pazderně stone bridge crosses the Nebovidský potok in the northern part of Červené Pečky near Pazderna Pond. There is no marked path to Lom u Červených Peček; access is via a bridge and then along a barely discernible path on the left bank of the Nebovidský potok. In the chateau park, Červenopečecká Pecka is a recurring open-air festival featuring folk, tramp, and country music.
