Třebíč combines an exceptional Jewish heritage with Romanesque-Gothic architecture, a diverse museum and astronomical experiences. This creates a destination where different interests can coexist: historic cityscapes, a Jewish cemetery, a museum in the former Waldstein Castle and public stargazing at the observatory.

Jewish Quarter and Cemetery

According to UNESCO, Třebíč’s Jewish Quarter is an exceptional testimony to the cultural traditions associated with the Jewish diaspora in Central Europe. The former Jewish Quarter features an exceptionally dense historic built environment. The cores and floor plans of the buildings date predominantly from the Renaissance and Baroque periods; narrow lanes, dark passageways and narrow passages shape the character of the quarter.

The Jewish Quarter is freely accessible to the public. The Jewish Cemetery provides an additional route into another, quieter aspect of the city’s history. In 2003, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Jewish Quarter. The cemetery contains approximately 11,000 graves and 3,000 gravestones. This site is also freely accessible to the public.

Basilica and Educational Trail

The three-nave Basilica of St. Procopius is a Romanesque-Gothic structure. In its crypt, the vault is supported by fifty columns – a specific architectural detail that extends the visit beyond the exterior architecture.

The 3 km educational trail “In the Footsteps of Abbots and Rabbis” connects the Jewish Quarter, the Jewish Cemetery and the Basilica of St. Procopius. These three attractions are among Třebíč’s UNESCO cultural monuments. The route is suitable for pedestrians, cyclists, pushchairs and wheelchair users, offering a clearly described way to combine several themes in one continuous discovery experience.

The Račerovický Circuit offers a different perspective on the surrounding area: it leads to a plateau with beautiful views over the Třebíč Basin.

If you would like to explore the basilica with expert guidance, the information centre in the Předzámčí building regularly organises guided tours of the Basilica of St. Procopius.

Museum and Observatory

The Vysočina Třebíč Museum is housed in the former Waldstein Castle. At the museum, visitors can choose between four permanent exhibitions. The museum visit thus complements the historic buildings with another way of engaging with Třebíč and its surroundings.

The Třebíč Observatory offers a distinctly different focus. It is located on the south-western edge of Třebíč and can be reached from the city via Ruská or Švabinského streets. Public astronomical observations take place at the observatory. Thus, alongside Jewish history, ecclesiastical architecture and the museum, observing the sky is also one of the documented experiences available at the site.

If you are looking for accommodation in Třebíč, you can choose your preferred focus based on these different experiences. For a stay with children, the educational trail explicitly lists pushchairs as a suitable form of use; at the same time, the city remains interesting for adults with an interest in cultural history.
