Krahulov – Culture, Ponds and Landscape in Czechia
Accommodation in Krahulov
Krahulov between Culture and Landscape
Krahulov combines traces of history with a landscape of ridges, stream valleys and ponds. Particularly characteristic is the Hradiště cultural area, locally known as “kolo”. It is located on the site of the vanished fortress of Krahulov, which was founded in the second half of the 13th century. A fortified area of the site is used as a dance floor, giving the historic location a present-day community function at the same time.
When choosing accommodation in Krahulov, your stay can therefore be tailored to different interests: culture enthusiasts will find several distinct points of interest in the village, while the landscape around the ponds and stream valley to the south shows another side of the destination. Families with different preferences can thus choose between historical discoveries, nature observation and a longer hiking route without leaving the village as their central destination.
Church, Monument and Culture of Remembrance
The Church of Saint Peter in Chains stands in an elevated position in the middle of the cemetery. The building is late Romanesque and was remodelled in the Baroque style. The church is listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
Sad svobody is also part of the local culture of remembrance. The site was created in 1919 for citizens who had fallen. A Liturgy of the Word is held in the church at 9:00 a.m. on the first and third Sunday of each month; a Holy Mass is celebrated at 6:00 p.m. on the Friday after the third Sunday. Subject to change.
Ponds, Stream and Krahulovský kopec
Krahulovský kopec reaches an elevation of 505 metres and, together with the stream valley, shapes the local landscape. The Parný Mlýn pond lies south of Krahulov. Twenty-five dragonfly species have been recorded there. There are also numerous populations of endangered species inhabiting shallow, warm still waters with abundant aquatic vegetation. This specific natural feature makes the pond a destination for anyone who wants to experience not only paths and buildings during their stay, but also the distinctive character of a body of water.
The Stařečský potok flows through the Parný Mlýn and Steklý rybník ponds south of Krahulov and empties into the Jihlava. The sequence of stream, ponds and stream valley gives the surrounding area a clear landscape structure.
Hiking and Arriving by Train
The 49.5-kilometre, yellow-marked Třebíčský okruh hiking trail passes through Krahulov and is also known as Cesta Václava Vlastníka. Its length and clear markings make it an independent option for an extended hike. For a shorter stay, the trail can be noted as an important part of the local hiking network without specifying a particular section.
The railway is also part of the village landscape: the Okříšky–Znojmo line runs through Krahulov and also provides a train connection for holidaymakers staying at the holiday settlement on Steklý rybník. Other places you can view in the broader selection of destinations are Dalešice, Čikov, Horní Heřmanice, Slavětice, Číchov, Petrovice U Třebíče, Sedlec and Ostašov.
