Častohostice – Church, Jevišovka and Village Culture
Accommodation in Častohostice
Častohostice between river landscape and living local history
Častohostice lies on both sides of the upper reaches of the Jevišovka. The village therefore combines a clearly recognizable landscape setting with a remarkable ecclesiastical history and village tradition. During your stay, this creates a multifaceted picture: you can explore a sacred building and its history, learn about the significance of water in the landscape and attend events that explicitly bring locals and visitors together. Those travelling with different interests will thus find several ways to discover the area, without reducing Častohostice to a single excursion destination.
St. Barbara and the traces of local history
The core structure of the Church of St. Barbara is a late Romanesque rotunda. Beneath the church are two externally accessible crypts: one for the Nimpš count family and one for clergy. The building is complemented by side chapels, which were probably added around the middle of the 18th century. It is precisely this combination of the older core structure and the later-added chapels that makes the church a place where different phases of architectural history can be read directly from a single building.
The written history of the village also reaches far back. Častohostice are mentioned as early as 1498 together with a parish. In 1575, they were divided into two parts; the second part was sold to the city of Znojmo in 1585. These dates do not describe an abstract sequence, but show that the development of the village was shaped over the centuries by ecclesiastical, feudal and urban relationships. For a journey with a cultural focus, St. Barbara thus provides a concrete starting point for perceiving Častohostice not only as a landscape location, but also as a historically developed village.
Meeting places, events and local features
The Prokešova stodola stands next to the fire station and close to the Jevišovka. It serves as a meeting place for people from the entire village on various occasions. Cultural and social events for locals and visitors are regularly held at the Prokešova stodola. The site is therefore part not only of Častohostice’s built environment, but also of its public life. If you are looking for an insight into the local event culture during your stay, this combination of meeting place and event venue is particularly interesting.
Another striking detail is the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It currently stands in a small park by an inn opposite the château. The statue is carved from Upper Austrian shell limestone. Its location and material give this monument two distinct features: firstly, it is integrated into a specific part of the village; secondly, the stone used points to a special level of craftsmanship.
Ponds as part of the landscape
The revitalized pond complex includes a recreation area available for residents to use. In addition, a restored pond was created on cadastral plot 701/1 for water retention in the landscape. Both details show different functions of water in Častohostice: the pond complex has a recreational area, while the restored pond is expressly intended for water retention. When choosing your accommodation, such differences may play a role in planning your days, for example if you would like to combine cultural impressions with time spent at a locally distinctive waterside area.
Wine and music as village traditions
Wine events are also among the documented features of the village. The wine tasting by the Šabata winery with Sylván cimbalom music on 8 July 2023 was the ninth edition. At this wine tasting, the tasting began at 3 p.m. and the music at 4 p.m. The example combines a regional wine presentation with a musical programme item and illustrates how culinary and cultural occasions are brought together in Častohostice.
