Světnov combines a long history with a remarkable landscape. The first written mention dates back to 1366, although the settlement was founded before 1293 through the colonization activities of Žďár Monastery. Today, Světnov lies within the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. Those looking for accommodation for a stay focused on nature and culture will therefore find various opportunities here for planning their days.

The Světnov Valley and its distinctive nature

One of the main attractions is the Světnov Valley. The natural monument encompasses a meandering stream and its floodplain. It also protects important meadow communities as well as meandering waterways with numerous protected plant and animal species. In spring, protected spring snowflakes cover the banks, giving the valley a distinctive seasonal character.

The best time to visit the Světnov Valley is around the end of March and beginning of April, when the spring snowflakes are in fullest bloom. A hike follows a forest path along the Sklenský potok into the valley. This makes it possible to discover the natural monument in a way that allows the stream, floodplain and forest path to become part of the experience together. The valley can also be reached by bicycle: a cycling tour from Zámek Žďár leads to the Světnov Valley Nature Reserve.

Cultural monuments and traces of local history

Světnov is home to several small historical sites that can be combined into a discovery tour. The stone road bridge over the Stržský potok is a cultural monument and was built in 1847 to replace an older wooden bridge. In the northern part of the settlement stands a stone cross dating from 1848, while in the southern part, beside the old road, there is a wayside shrine dating from 1719.

The religious history of the settlement is also visible. In 1854, a chapel replaced Světnov’s old wooden bell tower. After the First World War, two monuments to the fallen were also erected. Another special site is the Křížový kámen, a sandstone bearing a carved cross with trefoil-shaped ends. The stone stands beside an old path in the forests of the Světnov Valley. It probably commemorates the death of a Russian officer when troops were returning through the Bohemian lands after the Napoleonic Wars.

Světnov is also associated with the historical figure Prokop Paeonius. The poet, writer and professor at the medical faculty of Charles University was born in Světnov in 1581. This connection adds a literary and educational-historical aspect to the visible architectural and landscape monuments.

Which focuses suit your stay

If you want to focus on nature, the Světnov Valley, with its stream, floodplain, meadows and protected species, offers a clearly defined destination. For cultural and historical discoveries, the bridge, chapel, monuments, wayside shrine and Křížový kámen lead to different chapters of the settlement’s history. The cycling tour from Zámek Žďár additionally creates a connection between a starting point at a château and the valley.

Světnov is served by public bus services within the integrated transport system operated by ZDAR, a.s., and ARRIVA VÝCHODNÍ ČECHY a.s. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore take into account not only the landscape and historical details but also the area’s existing connection to public bus transport.
