Zbudov: Village Culture, Blata and Cycling Routes

Zbudov combines village history with the landscape of Zbudovská Blata. The village gave its name to this historic landscape and lies on the shore of Zbudovský rybník. Staying in this area therefore offers both cultural discoveries in the village and excursions into a distinctive landscape. The proximity of the village centre, water and open meadows defines the character of the surroundings.

Village Square, Heritage Protection and the Kubata Tradition

The centre of Zbudov has been designated a village heritage conservation zone. In the middle of the village square stands the former smithy at house number 28. The protected group also includes 19th-century Blata-type farmsteads at house numbers 1, 3, 4, 23, 25, 26 and 27. House number 1 is the Kubata Farm. This makes it possible to experience the village layout not merely as individual sights, but as a coherent village heritage site. It is precisely the combination of the village square, former smithy and preserved farmsteads that makes the architectural heritage tangible as a unified village setting.

The Kubata Celebration offers a special connection between history and living tradition. The traditional event begins with a service on the village square in Zbudov and continues at the monument to Jakub Kubata. The monument stands about one kilometre southeast of Zbudov on the Soudný potok. A marked cycling route leads there. Two stones on the Soudný potok are also associated with the legend of Jakub Kubata’s execution. The event thus connects a central place in the village with a destination in the landscape, complementing the visible architectural history with remembrance and traditional storytelling.

Zbudovská Blata and Observations in the Landscape

Zbudovská Blata consists of meadows in the floodplain of the Bezdrevský potok, also called Soudný potok. They extend between Zbudov, Zliv, Plástovice, Pištín and Sedlec. As a well-known ornithological locality, the landscape adds a distinctive natural element to a stay. Those wishing to combine village culture with open meadows and bodies of water will find a clear contrast here between the protected village centre and the wider landscape. Unlike the concentrated village centre, the focus in the Blata is on open floodplain meadows, bodies of water and observing the landscape. As a result, two different types of experience coexist in the same surroundings: architectural heritage and remembrance in the village, and natural landscapes and birdwatching outside the village centre.

Cycling between Village Stops and Cultural Monuments

Several described routes make Zbudov appealing for different types of excursion plans. The “Za selským barokem” loop is about 25 kilometres long and runs mainly along existing marked cycling routes. Zbudov is the sixth stop on this route and is described there as a village heritage reserve zone. The route also passes through Zbudov’s village heritage conservation zone. The approximate length of 25 kilometres helps indicate the scale of a longer cycling excursion, while the marked routes and cultural stops determine its thematic character.

The “Kolem Pištína na Blata” cycling route passes through Zbudov and is considered easy. It is intended mainly for families with children and for seniors. Alongside the longer, culture-oriented loop, this provides another option described differently. The difference between the approximately 25-kilometre loop and the route classified as easy makes it easier to choose according to the desired type of excursion, without reducing the landscape to a single theme. Zbudov can thus be included in travel plans as a starting point for visiting the village square, travelling to the Kubata monument and following routes through the Blata.
