Ražice – Nature, Railway History and Special Routes

Culture and Railway History in Ražice

A special event was the Ražický pražec country and folk festival, which took place for the 38th time from 15 to 17 May 2026 in the open-air natural amphitheatre in Ražice. The railway is also part of the village’s history: the Ražice–Tábor railway line was built between 1886 and 1889, and operations began on 1 June 1889.

Local architectural landmarks include the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1822 in the rural Baroque style. Its gabled roof, covered with tiles, is complemented by a four-sided brick bell tower above the gable. The Chapel of Saint Florian, by contrast, was built in the second half of the 18th century at the crossroads of the roads to Lhota u Kestřan and Sudoměř, by Miska Pond near Ražice. It was demolished on 20 September 1966; its present form has been significantly altered.

Špejchar Museum and Regional Topics

The Špejchar Museum presents a permanent exhibition in a reconstructed former granary in Ražice. Its first section covers the nearby Řežabinec National Nature Reserve and the Řežabinecké tůně wetlands. The second section focuses on the railway, particularly Ražice’s location at the junction of the important regional lines České Budějovice–Plzeň and Ražice–Tábor.

The exhibition also includes a model railway layout on which a small train runs at regular intervals. For orientation in the area, the museum is located near the railway station and a bus stop; parking is available directly at the museum building.

Cycling and Walking Routes

The “Přes Putim k Žižkově mohyle” circular route is 22 kilometres long and designed for cyclists and walkers. It begins in Ražice and leads via Putim, Řežabinec Pond, Kestřany, Žižkova mohyla, Mladějovice, Štětice and Humňany back to Ražice. The different route lengths help you tailor your planning to your preferred focus without mixing the route with a simple sightseeing tour of the village.

The Permonická stezka educational trail begins at Ražice railway station and leads to an open-air natural amphitheatre built on the site of a former gold mine. In the vicinity of Ražice, a 3-kilometre educational trail also runs around the Řežabinec Reserve.

Wetlands and Birdlife

The Řežabinec Reserve protects aquatic plant communities and waterfowl. In the vicinity of Ražice, the middle level of the Řežabinec observation tower is open to the public, offering views of the reeds along the banks and across the pond’s water surface. The nearest railway station to the observation tower is located directly in Ražice.

The Ražický nature monument includes a pond with extensive vegetation along its banks, an old oak-lined dam and adjacent waterlogged areas. The area is important as a breeding and resting site for a diverse bird population, including several wader species. Quiet nature observation thus complements the village’s historical and technical themes.
