Discover Milevsko – Monastery, Culture and Trails

If you would like to combine cultural history with experiences in the landscape, Milevsko offers several different points of interest. Milevsko Monastery was founded in 1187 and is considered the oldest monastery in South Bohemia. In addition, there is a tour of sacred buildings, a museum with regional history collections, viewpoints and a 19-kilometre route through the surrounding area. This allows you to shape your stay around historical discoveries, nature and other excursion destinations.

Milevsko Monastery and Sacred Buildings

Milevsko Monastery offers a sightseeing tour entitled “Sakrální stavby”. The tour includes the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (bazilika Navštívení Panny Marie). This provides a clearly defined cultural focus if you would like to learn more about the history and architecture of the place. The cemetery Church of St Giles (Hřbitovní kostel sv. Jiljí) is also one of the defining cultural monuments: it is an immovable cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

Museum, City History and Galerie M

On the ground floor of the Milevské Museum, an exhibition presents evidence of the history of the town and, in part, of the monastery from the 16th century to the mid-20th century. The archaeological exhibition complements this view of the period with finds originating mainly from the area around Milevsko. Galerie M provides another cultural highlight. It offers space for art exhibitions, events and programmes for small groups of visitors.

Galerie M is housed in a historic Baroque building dating from the end of the 17th century. Preserved contemporary architectural elements shape the building. The main building of the former old town hall, including its grounds, is protected as a historic monument. This makes the venue a combination of art, architectural history and a tangible piece of the town’s history.

Hills, Ponds and Views Around Milevsko

The Milevský vyhlídkový okruh is 19 km long and leads through the area around Milevsko, across hills and meadows, past ponds and through forests. The route therefore offers a different perspective on the region from the exhibitions and sacred buildings. Hůrka Hill offers a view of Milevsko Monastery. The Stations of the Cross (Křížová cesta) also provides views of the monastery, the town of Milevsko and its surroundings.

The educational and nature trail “Život na Hůreckém lesíku” offers an additional opportunity to experience nature during your stay. It provides information about the natural environment. For a change of pace on warm days, the Milevské koupaliště outdoor swimming pool has two pools measuring 25 × 12 m and 21.5 × 7.5 m, as well as a 5 × 3 m paddling pool.
