Locenice – Culture, Tradition and Events in South Bohemia

Ločenice combines the hilly landscape of South Bohemia with a local history reflected in customs, remembrance culture, religious life and sporting events. If you are looking for more than just scenery on your trip, Ločenice offers several clearly distinct themes: the Staročeská koleda Masopust tradition, the Chapel of Saint Agnes of Bohemia, a folklore ensemble, and scheduled events involving sport and technology.

Masopust and Folklore in Ločenice

Every year, the Staročeská koleda is upheld in Ločenice as a Masopust tradition by the volunteer fire brigade. Participants go from house to house to brass-band music, accompanied by costumed figures. In the evening, the tradition concludes with a dance at the local inn. In 1974, the Staročeská koleda was broadcast live on Czechoslovak Television. For your travel planning, this custom represents a cultural highlight combining a procession, music and an evening event.

The Květena folklore ensemble was founded in Ločenice in 1965 for Doudleby songs and dances. Thus, alongside the Masopust tradition, the village also has its own connection to musical and dance folk culture. Those wishing to combine different interests during a trip can consider these themes separately: Staročeská koleda describes a festival maintained each year, while Květena represents the village’s longer-standing folklore tradition.

Chapel and Remembrance Culture

The Chapel of Saint Agnes of Bohemia in Ločenice was completed and ceremonially consecrated in 1997. Services are held in the chapel regularly once a month. A pilgrimage mass is also held around the feast day of Saint Agnes of Bohemia on November 13. Alongside customs and landscape, these dates give a trip to Ločenice a religious focus as well.

The memorial to those killed in the First World War in Ločenice commemorates 29 local residents who died in the war. The memorial also includes a bust of T. G. Masaryk, which was ceremonially unveiled again on March 11, 1990. This memorial site highlights another aspect of the village: in addition to festivals and folklore, the local memory of Ločenice’s history is also part of the visitor experience.

Sport and Technology as Additional Events

The Ločenický duathlon took place on July 20, 2024, and July 12, 2025, at the sports field in Ločenice. The competition combined running and cycling. Another scheduled event was the traditional exhibition of stationary engines: it took place on June 28, 2025, at the village square grounds in Ločenice and included demonstrations of how they work. In Ločenice, these events complement the cultural and religious connections with running, cycling and technology.
