Staré Dobrkovice

Staré Dobrkovice is a destination for travellers who want to combine archaeological traces, historic buildings, protected landscape and cycling. Another bridge over the Polečnice belongs to Staré Dobrkovice; there are also the Dobrkovická Cave, mills and a railway bridge from 1892. The history of the village here stretches from Upper Palaeolithic finds to technical structures and a 14 km asphalt cycling circuit.

Archaeological Traces and Notable Buildings

The Staré Dobrkovice archaeological site is classified as a significant archaeological locality in category ÚAN I and assigned to the Mousterian and High Middle Ages periods. Its chronological classification thus ranges from very early prehistoric contexts to the Middle Ages. The Dobrkovická Cave lies south of Staré Dobrkovice, directly on the road from Český Krumlov to Kájov. A group of Upper Palaeolithic Homo sapiens sapiens hunters probably stayed there temporarily. A small number of bone and flint tools, as well as the remains of prehistoric animals, were found in the cave.

The Renaissance mill is a cultural landmark of Staré Dobrkovice. The Dobrkovický Mill bears the name Hamerský mlýn. On the Polečnice, it is a protected architectural monument and a Gothic-Renaissance-Baroque complex of buildings. The Dobrkovická water mill bears the names Hölderův mlýn and Hammermühle; it was converted from a water-powered hammer mill.

The railway bridge built in 1892 stands on the northern edge of the village. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk is part of a unique ensemble of numerous small Baroque religious buildings. The chapel therefore does not stand in isolation but within a spatially dispersed group of small religious buildings. These structures are scattered across a wide area beneath Mount Kleť. The ensemble is connected with pilgrimage processions to the well-known pilgrimage site of Kájov.

Landscape and Cycling

Part of the linear settlement of Staré Dobrkovice along the stream extends into the Blanský les Protected Landscape Area. The protected landscape area also extends into a built-up section of Staré Dobrkovice along the stream. The Dobrkovická Cave lies in the Staré Dobrkovice section of the cycling route below a vertical rock face with an overhang.

For a shorter cycling trip, the Malý Lazecko-Vyšenský Circuit is particularly clearly described: the circular route is also suitable for children and less experienced cyclists. It is 14 km long and paved; it takes approximately two hours. If you are travelling with people of different experience levels, this route offers a concrete way to include cycling in your stay without requiring a long or demanding tour.

There are stalactite formations beneath the Dobrkovice Bridge. Children from several generations went to see them. The bridge thus adds another specific feature to the archaeological and historical points of interest in the village.
