Hracholusky – History, Village Square and Cycling Circuit

Hracholusky combines the first mention of the village in 1334 with a cycling circuit through the village and traces of medieval gold panning along the Zlatý potok. This gives you a destination where village history and an active day out stand side by side, without limiting the perspective to a single period.

Historical Traces in the Village

Hracholusky is first mentioned in a written source in 1334. The 1580 land register of the Helfenburk estate records 41 resident households and three millers in the village. After the Rožmberks acquired Hracholusky in 1351, the village came under the administration of the burgrave of Helfenburk. These key points form part of the political and social history of the place.

Several buildings and local details are part of the historic villagescape. Farmhouse No. 31 is a listed cultural monument dating from 1846 and survived the great fire that struck Hracholusky in 1866; most of the village’s farmsteads date from the period that followed. A small 19th-century church dominates the spacious village square. The history of the mills is also part of the villagescape: the Fučíků and Balounů mills, formerly Petrášků, and the former Hamlýřů mill near the bridge over the Zlatý potok are already mentioned in the 16th century. Nový mlýn was established in the 1870s and completed in 1880. The village therefore brings together preserved architectural history, a central square and the memory of an earlier milling economy.

A Cycling Circuit through Hracholusky

The “Na Zlatý potok a hrad Osule” cycling circuit passes through Hracholusky. It is approximately 40 km long and runs mainly along existing cycle paths, local roads and Class III roads through moderately hilly terrain. The approximate length, varied route and terrain are relevant when planning your pace, breaks and the scope of your day. If you would like to combine cycling with cultural discoveries, the route offers a clearly described way to include the village in a longer circuit. The village’s history represents a different focus from the sporting route, but both can be combined within the same outing.

Landscape and Older Traces

The mountains of Libín, Volovický vrch, Rohanovský vrch and Vrata are located in the wider regional surroundings of Hracholusky. Chlumany, an ancient site, is also located there. A special connection between landscape and history is formed by the earth mounds known as “sejpy” on the banks of the Zlatý potok: they are traces of medieval gold panning. Alongside the village square, mills and farmhouse, the stream banks are therefore also specific features to consider when exploring Hracholusky.
