Hoslovice combines an exceptional water mill complex with insights into rural life in the Šumava foothills and viewpoints in the surrounding area. At its centre is the Vodní mlýn Hoslovice water mill. The complex consists of a mill with living quarters, stables with sheds and a barn. This makes it possible to experience a historically shaped place where buildings, everyday life and craft traditions belong together.

Water Mill and Living Cultural History

The Vodní mlýn Hoslovice water mill complex was declared a national cultural monument in June 2008. During a visit, you can see preserved, functional milling equipment, a pantry, a timber room and a living room with a stove and tiled stove. The tour is complemented by various types of agricultural equipment. The individual areas show how closely living, storing provisions, farming and technical work were interconnected on a rural estate.

The permanent exhibition “Life in the Šumava Podlesí Region” focuses on rural life, agricultural work, the cultivation and processing of crops, and livestock farming. Another focus is on traditional regional dishes, the storage and preparation of food, and customs throughout the year. The perspective therefore extends beyond milling technology and also includes the foods and habits that shaped everyday life in the region.

Events, Crafts and Regional Cuisine

Regular events at the Vodní mlýn Hoslovice water mill include children’s programmes, starting up the mill wheel and demonstrations of traditional craft techniques. These are supplemented by tastings of traditional dishes and freshly baked bread. For a trip with children, the events calendar thus offers a particularly vivid way to engage with the site: the documented attractions include not only exhibits, but also movement, demonstrations and flavours.

Hoslovice itself also has an established cultural focal point. The St. Wenceslas fair is celebrated here. Hoslovice is also home to the Chapel of St. Wenceslas, a listed late Baroque chapel from the second half of the 18th century. The water mill, exhibition, festival tradition and chapel each provide different points of emphasis, allowing you to shape your stay according to your interest in technology, everyday history, regional cuisine or sacred architecture.

Observation Platform and Mountains in the Surrounding Area

A telecommunications tower with an observation platform was built near Hoslovice in 2005. From the platform, there are panoramic views of the Šumava peaks, Horažďovicko and Strakonicko. For travel planning, this viewpoint complements the cultural and historical impressions with a clear connection to the landscape.

The surroundings of Hoslovice also include Sedlo Mountain [Sušice-Albrechtice], Vysoký Mountain and Popelná hora Mountain. In the wider regional area are the Radomysl Mediumwave Radio Mast ruins and Kamenná hora Mountain. Those who would like to focus on different themes during their days in Hoslovice—from mill history, regional cuisine and festival culture to landscape views—will thus find several documented topics for further orientation.
