Jan Hus Monument and Chapel

The Jan Hus monument in Horní Kněžeklady was initiated in connection with the planned celebrations marking the 500th anniversary of the burning of Jan Hus. Following a public collection, construction work began in 1915. The pedestal was built by the local bricklayer Matěj Nekola based on a design by the sculptor Švec. The ceremonial unveiling took place in 1921, after Professor Švec had returned from the legions in Russia. The monument's history makes it a particularly specifically dated part of the local history.

The chapel in Horní Kněžeklady is also part of the documented history of the village: it was built in 1916. The village chapel with a bell is considered an example of the typical architecture of village chapels around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and features particularly impressive stucco decoration on the façade. Its smooth, white-painted façade is characterised by brick-red architectural elements.

Cycling Routes with Different Distances

Two circular routes of different lengths are central to planning by bicycle. The Zámecká trasa is 86 km long and is intended for visiting four châteaux. Horní Kněžeklady lies on this circular route, which runs via Hluboká nad Vltavou, Purkarec, Temelín, Hněvkovice, Týn nad Vltavou, Koloděje nad Lužnicí, Bechyně, Březnice and Poněšice.

Another signposted circular cycling route to Borkovická Blata is 51 km long and passes through Horní Kněžeklady both on the outward and return journeys. The two distances help you organise your travel options according to the desired route format without mixing up the routes.

Culture and Historical Traces

All cultural events organised by the municipality take place at the cultural centre in Horní Kněžeklady. This provides a clear local reference point for researching cultural events. In addition, at the south-western boundary of the cadastral area of Horní Kněžeklady, there is a barrow field with two burial mounds near a crossroads of forest paths. The course of the forest paths largely takes the mounds into account.

In the context of Dolní Kněžeklady, there is also the medieval fortified site Tvrziště U kapličky. It consists of a central mound surrounded on three sides by the remains of a moat and is located on a gentle northern slope at the southern edge of the village.
