Doubrava – Vltava Riverbank, Local History and Cultural Monuments
Doubrava lies on the right bank of the Vltava and combines a small river landscape with a remarkably rich local and cultural history. Between the small valley, the watercourse and the historic traces, a destination emerges that is particularly suitable for anyone wishing to combine their stay with scenery and discoveries.
Between the Vltava Riverbank and the Small Valley
The location on the right bank of the Vltava shapes Doubrava's character. The village lies in a small valley with a small watercourse that frequently caused local flooding. This feature is part of the village's traditional landscape history and complements the view of the Vltava with a smaller body of water directly associated with Doubrava.
Local History Since the Middle Ages
Doubrava was first mentioned in writing in 1295 under the name “Dubraua”. The history of the area around the municipality of Chrášťany reaches back even further: numerous archaeological sites document settlement in the region as early as the Bronze Age. For visitors interested in cultural history, this creates a chronological arc from early settlement traces to the medieval mention of the village. The Bronze Age sites are located in the area around Chrášťany, while the medieval mention refers directly to Doubrava.
Burial Mounds and Protected Monuments
In the cadastral area of Doubrava nad Vltavou, the archaeological area SAS 33590 includes a currently protected burial mound site. At Doubrava-Kamenný vrch, only one of an unknown number of burial mounds remains.
Traditional rural architecture is also represented. In Doubrava nad Vltavou, two log granaries at house no. 23 are designated as immovable cultural monuments. The wooden granary at house no. 23 is also listed as a protected cultural monument. In the center of Doubrava, a village chapel stands in front of the “U Houšků” inn. The architectural features are located in different places: the granaries are at house no. 23, while the chapel is in the center in front of the inn. In Doubrava, archaeological traces and preserved examples of rural architecture stand side by side as two distinct forms of cultural heritage in the village's history.
An Inn with a Long Family History
The “U Houšků” inn has been owned and operated by the same family since October 1, 1931. This exact date marks a fixed starting point for the connection between ownership and operation that continues to this day.
Traces Along the Riverbank and of Water Engineering
The surrounding area also contains several water-related features. The remains of an unfinished bridge pier can be accessed from the left bank at Albrechtická Hladná. When water levels are low, the roof of a concrete ŘOP fortification can be seen from the opposite riverbank. The former Nový Mlýn was later converted into a hydroelectric power station for the Platan brewery in Protivín. Thus, the history of the surrounding area extends from remnants of transport infrastructure and fortifications to the later industrial use of hydropower.
