Horní Ředice combines a nearby natural area with a clearly situated local history. The Žernov Nature Reserve lies north of the village; at the same time, the hill near Ředice, a burial site behind the cemetery, and an early bus route recall different chapters of the past. This gives your stay two distinct points of focus: the landscape of the nearby protected area and historic places or events in the vicinity. If nature is your main priority, Žernov is the specific place to start; if you are more interested in history, local references lead to a skirmish, a burial site, and transport.

Žernov Nature Reserve north of the village

Žernov Nature Reserve lies north of Horní Ředice. It includes the Mordýř and Šmatlán ponds, with adjoining reed beds and wet meadows; specially protected plant and animal species occur there. The protected area was designated on 26 May 1995. The ponds form the bodies of water, while reed beds and wet meadows characterize the adjoining areas. Žernov can therefore be understood as a combination of bodies of water and wetland habitats. This combination can also help you choose a destination: you can combine a visit to Horní Ředice with a nearby protected area whose named features include bodies of water and wetland habitats.

Memorial sites from the Seven Years’ War

The history of the Seven Years’ War can be traced to two distinct places. In July 1758, a skirmish took place on the hill near Ředice between Laudon’s Austrian troops and the army of Prussian King Frederick II. Prussian soldiers who fell in the Seven Years’ War are buried behind the cemetery, in the direction of Dašice. The site was reconstructed and solemnly consecrated in 1997. For orientation, it is useful to distinguish between the two: the hill marks the location of the skirmish, while the burial site commemorates the fallen soldiers. The year 1997 refers to the reconstruction and consecration of the site; the skirmish itself took place in July 1758. This keeps the event and its later commemoration clear as distinct periods.

An early bus route through Horní Ředice

Another chapter began on 13 May 1908, when a bus route was established that ran through Horní Ředice and connected Holice, Pardubice, and Bohdaneč on round trips. It was considered the first bus route in the then Austro-Hungarian Empire and one of the first in Europe. Unlike the wartime events, this route tells the story of an early connection between the three places named. It offers a second historical perspective on Horní Ředice: alongside the military events of the 18th century is a transport history from the beginning of the 20th century. The historical picture therefore covers more than a single event.
