Dolní Sytová: Bell Tower, Bridge and Potholes

Dolní Sytová is a destination for those who want to combine cultural monuments with distinctive landscape features. The village offers unusual details from different periods: an archaeological castle site on a prominent hill, a wooden bell tower dating from 1790, and Peřimovský Bridge with its distinctive structural forms. This local character is complemented by the enormous potholes in the Jizera.

Castle Site and Bell Tower of Dolní Sytová

The archaeological castle site lies on a prominent hill with a summit plateau. A ditch and probably a well or cistern have survived. The site therefore points to an earlier fortification, without requiring the surviving elements to be supplemented into a fully preserved structure. If you are interested in history and landscape at the same time, the combination of the elevated location and visible traces in the terrain is particularly noteworthy.

Another characteristic structure is the wooden bell tower. It belongs to the štenýř type, a distinctive form of bell chamber, and was built in 1790. Its conical, octagonal shape and shingle roof give it a clearly recognizable appearance. The bell tower rings daily with an electrically operated and electronically controlled bell. The daily ringing thus complements the appreciation of its architectural form with an audible aspect of the village.

Peřimovský Bridge and the Forms of the Jizera

Peřimovský Bridge is a reinforced-concrete road bridge built in 1912. Its segmental arch has a clear span of 45 metres. The wrought-iron railings with concrete posts are also unusual. The plastered elevations of the bridge are decorated with twelve recessed panels each. Those who look for more than classic sights when travelling will find here an example of how technical construction and decorative design work together.

Near Peřimovský Bridge in Dolní Sytová, enormous potholes are visible in the Jizera. They range in size from several decimetres to several metres. Their formation can be understood from the action of the river: the strong current caught pebbles and sand in swirling eddies and used them to scour hollows in the riverbed or in large stones. The potholes thus make visible a geological process that is otherwise usually known only as an abstract explanation.

Churches, Ruin and Mountains in the Wider Area

The wider regional surroundings of Dolní Sytová include Spalona Stražnica, a ruin, as well as the churches of Lázně and Valdštejn. These destinations broaden the cultural perspective beyond the village, without being counted among Dolní Sytová’s own structures.
